I agree totally, Annie. My daughter once met Dr. Ruth at a conference and the doctor was thrilled to meet someone that was her height. Richard Simmons was a dear.
Duvall's direct comment quoted in both links tells a different story;
"I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Why? Because of Stanley. And it was a fascinating learning experience...."
Kubrick was a genius filmmaker, a one of a kind. Usually the most talented creative types are odd and different from others in many ways. No reason he would be an exception.
Didn't hitch do the same thing to Tippi Hedren in the Birds by making her go through some torturous scene many many times because she turned him down on the casting couch?
On Kubrick, most of his films had major impacts on the film world. A Clockwork Orange, 2001 A Space Odyssey and Full Metal Jacket are among my all-time favorites.
The entertainment industry, not just the film segment, has always had bad conduct, ugliness and unspeakable problems affecting those in it. Probably since Day One. I say this hypothetically for this instance, who knows what gossip is ever-swirling about person A and person B. Always something and usually not true. I'm not justifying any of it. But it's there and those who work in the business know it and are parties to it whether willingly or not.
Wow, 4 in one week... I, too, have fond memories of Richard Simmons. He was revolutionary back in the day. I couldn't not smile at the exercise videos, he was always so positive and upbeat.
Decades before Simmons was Jack LaLanne (pronounced La Laine) with a nationally broadcast daily exercise show that I believe started in the late 50s or early 60s. He was very popular at a time when women working outside the home was less common than now so many could watch his morning exercise show.
I went to school with one of his kids. He was genuine, the real deal - a vegetarian, exercising in real life from nearly sunup to sundown, and walking the walk. At a time when, again, such a lifestyle was less common than now.
Edit to add - found an obit for him with more detail
Jack L. being a pioneer is his day does not minimize Richard Simmons' contributions and positive effects on countless people. This is an obit thread about 4 people who died this week, let's keep it to remembrances of those people... Start new threads if you want to veer off-topic.
I loved Shelley Duvall in Three Women. I also knew the artist who did the murals in the swimming pool in that movie - he was good friends with my roommate in San Francisco.
Shelley made several movies with Robert Altman, and I liked all of them, especially Brewster McCloud, (her first movie), which was filmed in Houston when I lived there. At that time, I had the same Houston accent that Shelley had, although I lost most of it when I lived in San Francisco. However, my clothing design partner in SF told me that Shelley Duvall's character reminded him of me when he saw Three Women.
The cleaning woman where I worked in L.A. had previously worked for Robert Altman, and I was good friends with her. She told me that Altman wanted her to move to New York with him so that she could continue working for him, but she did not want to leave L.A., and she then got a job as a live-in housekeeper for my boss. She told me lots of stories about what it was like working for my boss, and she eventually quit and went to work for her has the cleaning person for the furniture company.
I've watched Jack LaLanne on TV and liked him, but I thought Richard Simmons was more entertaining. I remember hearing him say, "Move those legs - those are calves - they're steers!"
There was a Dr. Ruth style character in the independent movie that I was in. Paul did not give me credit on IMDB, possibly because I was not part of the original cast and was added in later. I played the part of Michael's brother, and our scenes were filmed at my house in Venice. I was given credit in the film credits - just not on IMDB,
Sorry but my comment was an intended response to your suggesting he was a pioneer or "revolutionary". My words don't diminish the reactions of his fans to his death.
