Comments (11)One dealer said "we take all the parts out of old engine and put into new block and replace the broken parts. The 2nd dealer said we completely rebuild your entire engine only replacing broken parts into a new block and the 3rd dealer said, " We order a new block with new engine parts inside and only install the outside parts onto your new block". All three dealers are accurate to an extent. Dealer 1 and Dealer 2 said essentially the same thing. They'll salvage the good parts from your old engine and reassemble with some new parts including a new block. Many people call this an engine rebuild. Dealer 3 is saying that he would buy a preassembled short block (probably from B&S) and add your current engine's external parts. All parts in the short block are new. Many people call this installing a short block. Here's a description of a preassembled short block from an online small engine reseller. "Unless otherwise indicated, short blocks come without flywheel, head, coil/magneto, alternator (if applicable), carburetor assembly, exhaust assembly, starter assembly and external sheet metal." -Deerslayer...See MoreControls, Infinity vs Trane 803, part of decision
Comments (24)TD, Thanks, this gives me some more information to present. I see the 45,775. What is the Ventilation and AED Excursion that's referenced, bringing the total to 53,642? I don't see on the Manual J where there's anything showing a factor for the Icynene insulation, which is supposed to allow me to reduce the sizing of HVAC, or the Low-E, argon-insulated windows we're using. I'd imagine they'd have an impact on the recommended size. Also, my wife and I don't use A/C as much as other people. The house is on the water and gets a really good breeze off the river. That, coupled with ceiling fans in all rooms, is good enough for us except for very hot, humid weather, which of course is all Summer in SW Florida. When we do run A/C, we usually don't set it lower than 78, and never lower than 76. As long as the humidity is lowered to a comfortable range, 76 to 78 is perfect for us. If I understand the role of sizing, a too large compressor will not run long enough to dehumdify properly, and with a thermostat at 78 it's possible we'll never get the humidity to a comfortable level. On the first floor, the 520sf Guest Suite will rarely be occupied, so we will have the suite closed off and the thermostat set to 80 to 82. The two other zones, totaling 2000sf, will be used every day and will have stats at 76 to 78, so normally we'll be cooling 2000sf. Should this be factored in the Man J, too? They're just running the ducts and the zoning dampers now. The compressors won't be installed until at least August, so I have time to make the right decision. I'm not sure when they put the two air handlers in. With the 4-ton XL 19i would the air handler be the same as the 5-ton? If so, then I don't have to worry about that in case those go in earlier. We're moving in June and renting the house next to our build, and I'd rather go over all this face to face instead of email. If it can't wait, I'll fly down and have a meeting. I agree with you that superior HVAC is very important, and I don't want to make an error. Where would be the best place to find an independent party to review the calcs, and what do I need to supply to get accurate info? Thanks again for everything. Comments (8)Oh, forgot to mention that tonight when I was working over there, I had an accident. I have paper runners laid down to keep the freshly varnished floors clean (I have 2 more coats to do and don't want them all tracked up). Anyway, as old homes do, there is a huge square hole in the floor of my bedroom where the cold air return is. Yup, you guessed it, I fell right in. The paper was laid over it and I walked right in to it. I busted the duct underneath and had a hard time pulling myself out. Ironically I hurt the leg that didn't go in far worse than the one that did. The one that fell through got all cut up from the duct but the other one took the force of the fall on the wood floor and my ankle is twisted and my knee is black. I really love this house because you know what, I don't care. :) It's all good. In a couple weeks I can rest my weary broken body in my new home!!! The accident, however, does prevent me from going to the decorating store tommorow and finding inspiration for everything. I'll probably spend half the day with ice on the knee and the other half hobbling around talking to my friend who is coming to take measurements to move the toilet over for me....See MoreNeed help with my appliance decision
Comments (8)You have a year from purchase to decide on the extended warranties with Miele. It depends on how much a $500 plus repair would hurt you. My combi steam stopped working in any of the steam modes 5 days after I started using it. The oven only modes worked fine. Miele replaced the entire steam unit which would have been in the $500 range if it were not covered under warranty. I bought 4 Miele appliances (the 3 ovens and a DW). The extended warranties are $250 (you can get a 10% discount code from Miele but then you also pay sales tax) for each of my appliances. I bought the extended warranty for the steam oven as I use it the most and it has IMHO the most "moving" parts and with my initial problem felt it was the most likely to fail. We decided not to spend an additional $750 on the other warranties as that amount would cover 1-2 repairs. I have had no issues with any of my other appliances in the first year so we decided to "roll the dice". Sounds like you have made a good decision on your selections. Enjoy!!!...See MoreVeronica Lawrence Interiors
