Chickweed in lawn
Comments (19)Silver, pesky chickweed is, as you know, a winter annual. They do pretty much languish in the heat of the summer, leaving behind a gazillion seeds that will germinate next winter. The types of grasses grown in northern climates also struggle in the heat. If you're smart, you'll take a solid IPM approach on the control of this weed. Review your lawn care practices to insure that you're growing a healthy, thick, vigorous lawn. I've learned that most people (you might be the exception) don't fully understand how important mowing height, mowing frequency, sharp blades, watering duration and frequency, and fertilization practices ALL are to the healthy lawn. The routines of maintenance are taken for granted, but they can be critically important. Truthfully, as annoying as Kimmsr can be sometimes, he's right that the first defense tactic is a healthy lawn. Then, you'll learn that pre-emergent herbicides can pretty much end your annual cycle with this particular weed, or at least reduce the infestation substantially. The timing of the application is important, of course, and you can never rely on a calender date. Typically, your pre-emergent would be put out in the late fall or early winter. Any that crop up in the winter can just be hand pulled. In a couple of years, if your cultural routine is top notch, your pre-emergent application is careful and well-timed, I daresay you'll not be enjoying any chickweed salad anymore, lol....See MoreChickweed
Comments (3)Chickweed prefers growing in good garden soils, near neutral soil pH, lots of available Nitrogen, and it is a prolific seeder and roots from stem pieces easily. The picture posted earlier does not show any Chickweed, other not easily identified plants but no Chickweed. http://extension.psu.edu/pests/weeds/weed-id/common-chickweed kimmq is kimmsr...See MoreChickweed and Sedge Issue
Comments (5)OP here- there was a nutsedge killer I saw at Lowes over the weekend that was 5% Quinclorac, so that's where I got that from. I didn't pay attention to the other actives in it, so there could be another active in the solution that goes after the nutsedge and the Quinclorac is for the list of other weeds that product targeted. The problem is there was no product that listed both chickweed and nutsedge together. That's what I really wanted. Of course now I think it may not be nutsedge, but orchard grass instead. I used the 2-4D for the chickweed because that is what I had on hand at the house (waste not, want not) and the label claims it will kill chickweed. I agree that an herbicide that specifically markets itself for chickweed may work a little better; however chickweed was on the list of weeds this product will kill. Herbicides/Pesticides/Sanitizers/Disinfectants are all regulated by the EPA and must produce efficacy data on their labeled claims, so I have to think the Bayer product I used will kill the chickweed, unless I screwed up the application. I should know by next week....See MoreHow to kill Drymaria cordata (tropical chickweed)
Comments (4)Follow up - Baking soda works on this weed, just like it does crabgrass. However, it is not good for the soil. So, I went to Lowes and was told to 1.) try Round Up for lawns, and 2.) go to a DIY Pest Control store nearby me in Casselberry, FL that sells lawn products as well. A product called Asulox is supposed to work like baking soda but is less harmful to the soil. The only problem is, it is only sold in a 2 1/2 gallon concentrate for $350.00 (yes, $350.00). OMG!! Anyone know if there is a way to buy this product in a much smaller quantity?...See Morethree4rd47
