Early July wedding

We are having a wedding at our house in early July. I’m in zone 8b and was planning on pruning my roses today. They have already leafed out and are about 30” tall. What should my pruning height be? They are a mix of grandifloras and hybrid tea rose. Thanks in advance

I hope someone from your zone comments, but until then. The time from making a deading cut above five leaflet leaf node that is minimally pencil thick, to the time a flower is blooming that grew from that node is 45 days here. That's for a hybrid tea. Grandifloras should be about the same time span. Now, that's for Pittsburgh, W. PA, zone 6b. I would wager that in zone 8b, roses grow faster. And, that's under ideal growing conditions and top care given.

As far as I know, roses bloom at different times in south z8b and in northwest z8b. In Seattle, roses are usually in full bloom from mid May to late June, with perhaps some smaller flushes in early July. In the south the roses bloom about 4 to 6 weeks earlier than ours do, so in early July you may get a second or even the third flush. Of course everything depends on the temperature, but in any case giving proper water and fertilizer is a must.

You need specific information from rose exhibitors in your neighborhood as to how they time their blooms for a show. I've done roses for three nieces' weddings and fall is easier to plan. Don't rely on one kind of rose; don't rely on one massive rose bush (Eden, which I planned to use for the bridal bouquet got the worst case of thrips in creation and brown edged roses don't do it. That bouquet ended up being noisettes and polyanthas) If you hear hot weather predicted, the roses will come faster, maybe as much as two weeks faster than normal. Line up refrigerators to hold buds and blooms that come to early. Test those refrigerators with max/min thermometers to find ones that the bud area doesn't get below 26F. Have rose friends nearby you can depend on. Have alternative flowers growing. Have a source for commercial roses as a back up. Consider using the cute blooming minis from Canada as Brides Maids bouquets. Let there be lots of alternatives and don't stress the small stuff....it's all small stuff....the wedding itself is the big stuff.

Are you talking about cut flowers? Or blooms in the garden? Hmm, my first thought was salvia Victoria. Love, love, love this! But all my other thoughts (for annuals) seem to be short flowers, lol. Annual lobelia, heliotrope, ageratum, petunias (although these are usually more purple). Larkspur. Heavenly Blue morning glories might be beautiful. Whites - zinnias should bloom by July, no? And echinacea? Hydrangeas (both blue and white). Clematis. Annual geraniums. Foxgloves and irises? Or will they be done by then? Sorry, I'm not really giving solid ideas - can never remember when things bloom! I'm just throwing out random ideas which may or may not be helpful. Dahlias usually bloom much later for me when I plant the tubers, but I do see lots of them in bloom in the garden centers much earlier. Good luck! Is the first one "Old Man's Cave"? I went to Hocking Hills several times while growing up. First on family trips and later on school-sponsored overnight field trips. Just from memory I recall the name's of a few of the attractions: Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, Cantwell Cliffs, Ash Cave, and if I remember correctly 2 other named areas. I was always slightly bothered by them being called "Caves" since they are to my mind simply overhanging cliffs.

murraysmom - the sprinkler looks very similar to the creations of a craftsman that would sell them at Quailcrest Farm, Wooster, at their Spring or Fall arts and craft faires. He would bring quite a few and they would all sell out before the day was over. Last year and this Spring, Mom and I made the comment that we hadn't seen him at the faires. He was elderly, perhaps he retired. I am sorry I never purchased one all those years.

Keep in mind the japanese beetles might try to eat the blooms in July. You might want to cover your bushes with netting for a while in late June, or I’ve also heard some people say Sevin dust has worked for them. No chemical I have put on the bushes has worked for me against the beetles, so this year I’m going to just pick off all the blooms in July and put three DIY bucket size beetle traps surrounding our property to try to capture as many as possible at beginning of the beetle’s season. I read on forums that some fruit farmers have been doing that. The beetles really are terrible.

You could also plant some dahlia plants! Not the bulbs, as those won’t bloom until late August. But the plants that are being sold already blooming at nurseries. They put on such a great show in July! If you are in the south then Russian Sage might be lovely too. One last suggestion is planting florist zinnia seeds, direct sown, after last frost. Zinderella Peach for example. If you round out your flower plan then beetle devastation wouldn’t be quite as disappointing if the beetles win this year.

Great advice! I will add the flowers mentioned. I just planted a flat of zinnia seeds to get a head start
