Area rug suggestions

last month

I am looking to replace my current area rug. I like that it is light to contrast with the dark floor, however with two dogs I have to constantly clean it. I want a larger rug but I’m not sure if I should go with a richer color or stay neutral. I would love some ideas. Kathy

Yes to larger. Make sure it goes all the way past the FP so the front legs of the chair are on it.

It's nice but it looks too gray in the photo. I would pick something with some more obvious warm tones in the pattern so it would blend better with your floors, walls, sofa and fireplace. Something with with a little tan or brown that would tie the room together. edited to add - tan/brown and gray (warm and cool tones) can look great together but it is tough to pull off. We get many, many posts from people who try the combo and then post here asking for help because they can't understand why their room looks off. If you love brown and gray, go for it. If you are on fence, I would stick with warm neutrals and a bright accent color. It makes decorating easier.

Try esalerugs.com. They have an option to view their rugs with your photo. I bought a polypropylene one from there last year and was pleased with it. Your photo is a bit under exposed, so it’s hard to tell what shades would work well. I think a nice shaggy cream colored rug would look inviting there. I’m a huge Kilim fan and like that idea a lot, especially with your furnishings and tile. I have three Kilim rugs and lots of pillows! They’re classic. Off to hunt and hopefully others see this and weigh in, too. :) ETA: Sundance has some beautiful rugs, but again they might be more thin than you’re wanting. ETA 2: Looking at colorful rugs — I like this from Horchow … And this from Rug Studio … One more for now, great colors in this Karastan — click on ”reviews” to see it in people’s rooms … I’d check Etsy, too. Lots of great choices.

Use a rug visualizer available on many rug sites to see how a rug will appear in your room.

With your current furnishings layout, the area rug is placed across the room. To get the front feet of the seating on the area rug, a much larger rug will be required for the room.

In these photos above, I had to use a 10 x 14 size. Those are very expensive to purchase. If you can adjust the position of the furnishings, you can use an 8x10 rug and save a lot of money.

Agree with the above. Go bigger and go for some color that works with your furniture.
