Do I need a retaining wall

Hi,

Id like to plant a medium sized tree on the upper side of the hill near the fence and some plants on the lower half of the hill.

Do you think i need a retaining wall or can i just plant directly in the ground as is?

No, that's not a steep slope; you don't need a retaining wall.

I disagree with inkognito. The architect of engineer could tell you but will probably charge a few hundred dollars for something a mason will more than likely tell you for nothing. There should be no reason that you couldn't butt the new feildstone to the basement section but when you get to the siding I think there should be some space. If you are going to fill the space with dirt I think that is a bigger problem to be against your siding than the stone (again against the basement no prob).

I have the exact same situation. I'm using evergreen clematis,coral honeysuckles,cross vines (hummers luv them),confederate jasmines(smell great), a few clematis mixed in. I have a couple of shrubs like red twig dogwoods,pyracantha and a fragrant tea olive to add some contrast. I use fence staples to train stuff against the rr ties. Spray paint them black and you don t even notice them.

You can purchase a rotary hammer (the heavier duty version of a hammer drill) for around $180. A hammer drill is less than $100. A hammer drill is more likely to be useful for other work, since the hammer can be turned off (not possible with all rotary hammers).

The joints have enough space to allow this heaving movement. The large spacious joints in a dry stack wall are like expansion joints in other strucures, they will take movement.

Just keep the drain clear of the fallen leaves. You don't want a drainage problem near your house.

Just plant your tree in the ground, but hopefully it won’t grow very large. That’s not a very big spot and it’s closed in by a fence and concrete walkway and what looks like a driveway. You want to be sure you can drive/park a car there.

Do you own the land on the other side of the white fence? Obviously a mature tree will hang over it.

You are better off without a retaining wall. Shrubs are a good way to keep dirt from eroding on a slope. In that space, you want a smallish tree. Make sure your tree is suiting for your site (sun, climate, soil). Be sure to keep it well-watered in the first year. (If it's suited to your climate, after that, it should be okay with just rain, unless you have an unusually dry period).

In that small space, I would go with a shrub or small tree, and follow Sigrid's advice about choice and care.

If you plant a tree you run the risk that when it gets larger the roots will undermine the driveway and sidewalk paving. If you do move forward with a tree, talk to a nursery (not a big box store) about what kind of root system the tree will develop over time and whether this will be a concern. Bushes are a better choice. You could have a nice planting area there. Do you know why the grass hasn't done well there?
