Hickory flooring...bad choice?
Comments (18)We have site-finished hickory floors. We used 3/4" solid hardwood in 5" planks. We are not having any issues with gaps, cupping or anything else and it's been down and finished for over a year. But, we live in a climate where the humidity doesn't fluctuate much. I will say that hickory is difficult to sand (it's very hard) and it's difficult to stain (doesn't take up stain very easily). If you go with hickory and you do not want orange/yellow tones or undertones, you're going to have to go dark with the floor and it's going to be difficult to get it to stain dark. So, you will need someone who is familiar/comfortable with working with hickory or you are going to have to be prepared for difficulties in getting the wood to do what you want. We do like our floors, but, lol, I would go with oak next time because it just seems like it would have been less trouble. Plus, for whatever reason, most everyone thinks that our floors are oak, anyway. I think your Amish fellow is giving you good advice....See MoreHelp with Hickory Floors!
Comments (44)Nothing here other than air conditioning in the summer, furnace in the winter, and maybe the windows open in the spring and fall if the humidity is low and it's beautiful outside and nice enough to open the windows. I really don't think you're going to have any issues at all as long as your wood is acclimated for the week or two it needs and your installer is doing the job correctly. The tongue and groove part of the wood takes care of itself (keeping it together and giving it the ability to move as it needs). You're going to be fine....See Morehickory Harwood flooring -best brand?
Comments (6)Honestly we would pay what it takes. Just can find nothing that fits the bill. Found one and it got rejected when it arrived from China. Thank god we dodged that bullet. Found the Shaw flooring but there is a long thread on gear about splintering and the top layer peeling?! No thx!! I want a good quality floor and am willing to pay for it but this has to be once and done as we are doing our entire house and have to move out. Finding flooring is so stressful!...See MoreBest finish for red oak floor?
Comments (2)IMO you refinish all the floors to match and before oing that make sure all the lighting is the same in every space so LEDs 4000K bulbs in every fixture . Red oak is red so going light just makes it pink ....See MoreShopping mamma G
