Furniture Design Dilemma

glass dining table design trouble

Bought a new house (and had to buy the furniture with it). I’m not overhauling the furniture for another 18months— in the interim, anyone have any good ideas how to make a modern glass extending dining table (chrome legs) look less modern and more coastal? I’m a cape cod gal at heart and this furniture is way too modern for me! The chair are off white leather seats and back with chrome legs. Ugh. Thanks!

You may have luck selling it to someone who likes chrome and glass. If not, perhaps you can wrap the chrome with jute.

Consider putting a tablecloth to cover the glass. I would also find a pad for over the glass to cut down on the noise when using such a table.

Wrapping the chrome is a good idea also, although it might be tedious because you will have to secure the ends.

You could also buy slipcovers for the chairs--floor length would cover the legs. Amazon has many from which to choose, but I am sure there are other sources.

I think if you want clean, glass is the way to go. The pawprints, fingerprints, splatters, who knows what are still there on the wood. Unless you have a poly surface, you can't wash them off. Same with tile grout. People get colors to hide the dirt. I would rather know the dirt is there to clean it off. Seeing everyone's legs under the table is funny! I guess I have never eaten a meal at a glass table to remember that. Tablecloths are a good solution for meal time to get around that one. I prefer wood but don't feel it is a clean surface as others do. That bothers me but I doubt I will ever have a glass table because they feel modern to me. You can repair damaged wood on a good table but the glass gets scratched forever. I don't think it is cheap to replace!

I would call your local mirror and glass company. Sometimes the weight of the glass is all that keeps them in place (it would be shatterproof glass for safety). We have also used silicone iirc on outdoor tables. The bigger issue may be what the base looks like when you remove the top; if it was not designed to be on display it may need finishing, or may be too crude to look attractive.

I love that furniture and wouldn’t paint it ... it has beautiful lines, nice details, lovely color, and more depth as is than paint would. I think it works better for a transitional dining room ... it brings the traditional to the mix. I’m a fan of painted furniture, but more for pieces that don’t have original, redeeming qualities (although there are some beautiful examples posted here for sure). There’s nothing wrong with embracing sentimental value, unless it’s something truly hideous. :) I would wallpaper the big wall the bar is on. I like your idea of sconces with the bar. I am not sure what is or isn't on houzz although frankly I am not always impressed by the designs on houzz because most of them are very "safe" and boring. That said if you google glass dining room tables there are plenty of those including some very contemporary ones. I will say that wrought iron reads patio furniture to me personally but without seeing the actual base who knows. I had considered a glass top when I remodeled and redecorated because it was practial as you just wipe it clean and for the most part don't have to worry about protecting it. Ultimately I decided against based somewhat on aesthetics but also because there wasn't a way for the glass to be aesthetically anchored to the base.

Some of those tables can be expensive, so before I started messing with it, I would try to figure out the price/quality and decide if I should start gluing stuff on it or if I should sell it.

If it isn't an expensive table, another option is to use Rustoleum Paint spray. I used it in the past to change a gold chandelier into an oil rubbed bronze color. You will need to do some prep to the metal before you spray it. Not a hard DIY project.

Can you show the table? Would spraying the legs black suit/change it enough? You could add a table cloth for your Cape Cod feel.

White leather chairs are another story and maybe try selling on Marketplace. Look for black chairs that feel casual. A rug, chandelier and accessories will also help.

I have a glass and wood base extending table it was from italy and 6K so I would not be quick to ditch it I see nothing about chrome and glass that cannot be beachy . We do however need to see the table . This is mine
