Why aren't glass top dining tables more popular?

last year

I currently have a very nice Carolina Forge wrought iron table base with a 48" inch glass top. Im thinking of buying a larger glass top that seats 6-7 and using it in my dining room. (Ive done the math and the base will safely accommodate the larger glass.) However, I'm not seeing a lot of glass dining tables here on Houzz and I'm wondering if there's some significant negatives of which I'm unaware. Any thoughts?

For me it would be fingerprints and smudges although I'm not overly concerned about them such that I'd be compelled to constantly clean it.

Also I don't find them aesthetically appealing. They're trying be invisible, but they're there.

I am not sure what is or isn't on houzz although frankly I am not always impressed by the designs on houzz because most of them are very "safe" and boring.

That said if you google glass dining room tables there are plenty of those including some very contemporary ones. I will say that wrought iron reads patio furniture to me personally but without seeing the actual base who knows.

I had considered a glass top when I remodeled and redecorated because it was practial as you just wipe it clean and for the most part don't have to worry about protecting it. Ultimately I decided against based somewhat on aesthetics but also because there wasn't a way for the glass to be aesthetically anchored to the base.

I think if you want clean, glass is the way to go. The pawprints, fingerprints, splatters, who knows what are still there on the wood. Unless you have a poly surface, you can't wash them off. Same with tile grout. People get colors to hide the dirt. I would rather know the dirt is there to clean it off. Seeing everyone's legs under the table is funny! I guess I have never eaten a meal at a glass table to remember that. Tablecloths are a good solution for meal time to get around that one. I prefer wood but don't feel it is a clean surface as others do. That bothers me but I doubt I will ever have a glass table because they feel modern to me. You can repair damaged wood on a good table but the glass gets scratched forever. I don't think it is cheap to replace!

Our Austrian friends had remote control roller blinds :) Joanie, I like my not-self-defrost freezer because it stays 0 all the time. When I take something out, it is frozzzen. I only defrost it every 3 years or so; I think since it lives in the basement, constant temperature/low humidity environment, and we don't open it every single day, it doesn't get so much moisture inside. People are going into your minifridge all day, stealing your yogurt, etc, it has to work hard to stay cold. So my freezer is for long-term storage, not the things I'm using in the next month.

Why there aren't more 4-drawer stacks?

If you read some of the comments a lot actually fits. I realized I can put all of my plates and bowls in one middle drawer of a 24" 4 drawer stack and most of the serving pieces in the bottom. That allows me to not have to stack small plates on top of big plates and not waste all the "air" that would be above the dishes if not stacked in a three stack. I am basically storing the same things I planned to put there AND got an extra drawer. I would agree that most people need some 3 drawer stacks for bigger things (pots and pans), but after reading this thread and going around my kitchen actually putting bigger things in my one 4 drawer stack I realized how efficient they really are! I hadn't planned on having any but now I am making at least 3 of my drawer stacks 4 drawer. I will keep the two biggest (36") as a 3 stack and maybe do drawer in drawer on one or two of those drawers.

If the base is beautiful that is a good reason to use a glass top…..but glass does scratch…so any centerpiece will most likely need at least a circular mat beneath it…and for dining placemats should be used…that will need to be removed when not used ….in order to view the base….and…finally there is always the fear factor with that kind of top ….someone may lean too hard and cause an upset…usually a concern when children are in the picture…

Ha- I had a friend with a glass top dining table. I never realized that I sometimes slip my shoes off a bit! Certainly can’t do that when everyone can look down and see all these feet!!
