Type of Sherwin Williams exterior paint for Atlanta

I'm about to have the exterior of my house painted using Sherwin Williams paint. It's a brick house, so we'll be painting a small section of siding, all the trim, the doors, shutters, downspouts and gutters. Some bidders specify SuperPaint, one specifies Duration paint, and one specifies Emerald. We live outside Atlanta -- so think of high heat and humidity. Which paint would be best? Why? Is it worth paying more for the Emerald line over the other two? Thanks for any insights anyone can share.

Thanks, Hallett & Co - How did you decide to use Duration? Do you think it holds up better or performs better in any way than the other two levels?

The old coat of solid stain that has weathered makes a good prime coat if it's clean, dull & dry and is a sound coat, meaning not peeling or compromised in some other way. Duration is a house paint, whereas the other is a stain. The chief difference is the dry film thickness and sheen. the thin dry film makes the stain follow the contours of the wood and can give you a more authentic or maybe even rustic look, depending on the wood. It will almost always be flat, with no shine at all. The thicker coat will more fill in the grain of the wood and probably have an eggshell or higher shine, maybe even to a satin or semi-gloss. It most likely will not be available flat. A thinner coat means shorter life, the trade-off reflected in the price. A properly applied thicker coat of duration can be expected to last a good long while, but I wouldn't use anyone's "lifetime". If the wood has roughness or character to it, that you want to exploit for a certain look, I'd put stain on it. If the wood is smooth, almost shiny the way it is, I'd use house paint.

Well your home is going to be totally lovely! I like Dover White on a home exterior and in a shady spot. I used it just in the covered entry of my home and it looked so nice... It is just an all around good reliable color, in my opinion. The balance of my house was a more creamy white... and the way I got that color was to send a painter over to check out the color on a house a few streets over! My painter loved the Dover White and convinced a few of his other clients to use it. There's just something about that color...

Is your plan to pain the entire house or just the trim? On my monitor the current color is yellow with a set of burgandy shutters and a set of green shutters. Green trim. Is this correct?

Are you getting bids with the paint listed separately?

I would not use SuperPaint. The retail per gallon price difference between Duration and Emerald is about $5.

I've used a good bit of Duration and been very happy with it. Have not used Emerald. I'd ask your painters, and maybe visit a Sherwin Williams store to see what they say.

Thanks for your response, PPF - Each contractor has included the paint, with two of them offering "additional cost" for upgrading to the next level of paint. I'm leaning toward either the Duration or the Emerald, and I'd like a better understanding of the difference between the two levels. One SW employee just advised going with whatever my contractor proposes, since that's the paint they're comfortable with, but I'm guessing that there must be an actual difference between these two levels to justify the additional cost.

The better/more expensive the paint, the better its ingredients are. Final film thickness is also better too.

It is LITERALLY......that simple.
