Configuring ductwork for least noise
Comments (16)I am going up from my hood through 2 snaking 45s to scoot into the chase in the room above...then putting the silencer in the chase, then some pipe to get me into the attic (another 6' or so) then the blower and our the side wall once in the attic. I was thinking, since I am framing up this chase for the silencer to go in, and since the silencer is big and heavy...maybe I would take a piece of plywood say 15x15, cut a 10.5" hole in it, mount it to the framing and then put the silencer on that. It would support the weight of the silencer and any ducting above it easily..the 10" flange would stick through the plywood to attach to the ducting below. I was also thinking I could do the same thing above the silencer (another collar) and to eliminate any chance of vibrations maybe use a dryer vibration mat to line the top side of the bottom collar and the underside of the top collar...so it would be basically sandwiched between 2 pieces of framed in plywood lined with a vibration reducing pad. (like this https://www.amazon.com/casa-pura-Anti-Vibration-Vibration-Appliances/dp/B07D4HMW82/ref=sr_1_19?keywords=vibration%2Bisolator&qid=1559785828&s=industrial&sr=1-19&th=1 ) Thoughts on this approach? I have no science to back it up but it seems like locking the silencer in like that would work well and eliminate even slight vibrations that could be traveling down the duct so there would be minimal vibrations near the hood? (blower will be mounted in attic with vibration isolating mounts...looking to pick a few of these up tomorrow https://www.zoro.com/mason-vibration-isolator-neoprene-35-to-75-lb-2lvr9/i/G0288583/ )...See MoreHelp with mismatched stucco
Comments (13)"It would seem that the brushcoat/fogcoat would allow for a more uniform finished appearance" With respect to color, yes, when correctly applied. "and texture." It will have no affect upon the existing texture other than to dull the differences. To blend the texture it will take applying more colorcoat, to a building corner, so that that wall will appear uniform. mag77 "The purpose of black paper is not to prevent condensation of vapor from inside the house;" Condensation occurs when there is a difference in temperature of the atmosphere. Hot air can retain more moisture than cold and when hot air reaches a moisture level greater than its ability to retain it when cooled. That moisture is released in the form of condensation. The vapor barrier, be it the black paper backing of the lath process, the plastic membrane under drywall, has as one of its function, preventing that condensation from being absorbed into the stucco or drywall allowing it to dissipate within the wall cavity "it is to prevent water from entering walls from the outside." Its another of its functions, and works well, until it fails due to age, improper installation or repair. "Stucco most certainly does breathe," Actually, it does not. What you are terming as "breathing", is evaporation, the absorption of moisture into the atmosphere. "because, if it didn't, the framing would rot." Really! My stucco is virtually waterproof, I must be doing something wrong. "This was exactly what happened with Dryvit/EIFS houses all over the country." Actually, Dryvit/EIFS are meant to be impervious to moisture, by design, HOWEVER, AGAIN, if there is a failure, and it does not matter if it is wood siding, brick, wood, stucco, Dryvit/EIFS etc., and there is moisture intrusion, only then, will the framing rot. By the way. Painting seals the stucco and it no longer "breathes", unless of course, there is a failure and the moisture is retained behind the paint, causing the eventual deterioration of the stucco....See MoreShow me your mismatched, anti-RH vintage finds...
Comments (28)Most of my favorite pieces are family antiques ... and yes, I do know how lucky I am to have these. The bed I grew up in, and the step stool my grandfather made ... he was a well known Buffalo artist ... that was the dog my mother grew up with. (And 2 of my silly kids, Lily the dog and her buddy Bailey). Same room, love the little high chair, chest and mirror. I've been trying to find out something about that chair since I haven't seen another one like it. My tempermental grandmother's clock .. doesn't like the humidity in the summer so refuses to work, and game table. The pictures on the far wall, I have photos of these hanging in my great-grandmother's parlor ... the reflection on the one is bad. My sister told me to repaint the frames, I told her I wasn't touching antique frames! My Mom tells me this is my best piece ... this was also in my bedroom when I was growing up. The glass cabinet was a piece my Mom found at an estate sale shortly I moved into this house ... she said I needed it to display my family treasures ... she was right! the clock is another family piece, this one works all year round. This was in my grandmother's dining room, she had all her china/glassware in it. My sister, who is an interior designer, didn't want it because it was "too primitive" ... lucky me!! This is a jelly cupboard my Mom & I pulled out of my grandparents basement and refinished ... it had been painted to match the rest of the cupboards in the basement. Comments (18)Use the same number of panels as the number of windows. Line the stiles up with the mullions. Use an inside mount frame that is typically called a Z frame and do a sill cut on the bottom. This way the frame will sit on the marble sill and the sides and top will overlap the edges giving you a nice finished look. You can get a free ebook that explains all about shutters at this blog post. https://dressthatwindow.com/beauty-of-shutters/ another thing I would recommend is that you do what is called a split tilt. You will see that in this picture also. The tilt rod is made as 2 pieces so that you can open the top and bottom separately. This allows you to open the top for light and leave the bottom closed for privacy. Don't get Hunter Douglas shutters unless you want to over pay. Get that ebook and read it to understand the different types of materials and what is best. If you are somewhat handy you could easily install the shutters for these 2 windows yourself. If you are not handy, say yourself the frustration and have someone else do it. Good luck!...See Morehoussaon
