Windows Design Dilemma Exterior

Looking for advice on siding...big decision!!

We are starting a fairly extensive reno this spring. I am really needing recomendations for siding. We are wanting to do LP Smart Siding. The house is on 5 acres, very open, and spacious in the country. We do live in a 4 season climate....so we get full on cold winter........It's a bit of a quirky design with the different roof lines, so I can't figure out if it should all be board and batten, or some B&B with horizontal. And then how many colors? 1, 2, 3.....I am really unsure😐 . We are replacing all the windows on the lower level that currently shows the french door. That wall will be mostly picture windows and a door. I really appreciate any recommendations.

Yes, we are moving the greenhouse 😉

From my perspective I see board and baton adding nothing for your home, the areas are all fairly short and the scale would be off. I would do it all in horizontal siding and definitely all one color.

Pretty home and landscape surroundings. I tend to agree with @millworkman . Don't think that board and batten goes quite right there. You have a great opportunity to really tighten up the shell and make for an efficient home while you have the siding off so be sure to research your air sealing details.

R/F: I'm partial to SZ, having had great performance with multiple units (in multiple houses) over many years, & have SZ in our new kitchen. Beverage Center: have you looked at the Monogram one? Great looking & racked well. We ultimately went with Monogram refrigerator drawers because we wanted food storage capability too. Beverage centers don't get cold enough to safely store food. Range: I was impressed with Monogram, never could see a BlueStar in our area. Both the Monogram & the BlueStar have the power you need, so the slow simmer should be your main decider. If both are satisfactory to you, then it's down to your decision between electric or gas oven. (We chose a DCS all gas 36" range, all burners, because of our wiring and we also have an electric wall oven. It can do low simmer without a diffuser. The infrared broiler in our range is more important to us than the lack of self-cleaning, and the oven can switch to convection.) DW: We've had KitchenAid & it's good, much better than the JennAir it replaced. We have Miele now, which cleans better than our KA and is much quieter. Faucet: We have KWC Domo & love it. We have the side control pullout version on our main sink, and the top control pullout version on our prep sink. Microwave: I'd prefer a drawer in an island.

Tropic brown, tan brown are two others. There are very dark golds like Juparana Tobacco or Paradiso which might work. You might also consider something like teak wood. Etching leaves white marks. On a brown marble it will be very visible. For fun, I got a two buck pink marble tile from the box store and had "science" when I was trying to decide about counters. Science consisted of pouring a small qty of lemon-lime soda on a bit of the marble and seeing if I could get it off before it etched. The answer was NO! I would suggest you spend a couple bucks to get a tile similar to what you want to use and have your own science project.

It seems you have decided on navy curtains but I wanted to point out that they will fade noticeably at those windows. I liked the photoshop with the softer blue gray curtains for the amount of light you'll be getting as well as the color. Otoh, you could use an oatmeal linen and have it banded with navy the way those curtains Rorah posted were banded with coral. A bit of navy but not overwhelming. You could probably find the curtains and have a workroom add the navy banding at the bottom and leading edges. Rorah, my mother had those oatmeal linen curtains trimmed with coral in our library when I was a child. No valance, they were on a traverse rod. Decades later she gave them to me and I used them for another five years. Good design is timeless!

The most valuable prep space is between the sink and range, and you should have a minimum of 36", but--42-48" would be better. I agree with anniebird, about the sink on the island, and if you have only one sink, then put the DW to the right (as you face the island), so that it is not between the fridge and range. In that layout a helper can load or unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without interfering in prep and cooking tasks. If you really don't want a sink on the island, you might consider making the island 8' (which will still accommodate 4 seats), and putting the clean-up sink on the left wall. You might need to move the door down, but when you build the DR addition, you could make the window a pass-through, and dishes would be convenient to the new DR, in drawers on the end of the island, and in the corner susan or in drawers next to it. The clean-up sink as drawn could then be a prep sink, centered on the right window section, to give you more prep space between it and the range. A trash pull-out under the prep space would be convenient, and the clean-up sink could have a smaller trash pull-out below. Click to enlarge: Good kitchen planning info: New to Kitchens? What color is your roof? Is it a gray with a bit of brown in it? If so, here's a house in a very pale sage with brown wood garage door and pillars. It has many rooflines like yours, so the single color gives it unity. You definitely need to address landscaping with some deep front beds as below all the way around. Lack of landscaping makes the house look very bare.

We just moved here in Aug last year, and we definately have landscaping plans, but kitchen/Windows/siding first. The shingles are greyish with some Brown. Any suggestions what we could do in addition to horizontal siding, just to add some curb appeal?? Thanks 😉

White windows with a wide flat casing, white trim elsewhere. I think a blue vinyl would look good as well. Maybe replace the fluted columns with a square column.

I'd consider B&B on the upper portions of the home to make it appear larger.

That's what I had originally thought, the line would draw the eye upwards. Stick with 1 color??

I think the board and batten could look good if it is trimmed nicely, but I don't think mixing would work on this house.

As far as curb appeal, you can do so much with this house. For the front, do really nice flowerbeds. Make sure to have perennials and shrubs that don't lose their leaves during the winter. You have plenty of room for a vegetable garden. In the back of the house I would expand the patio ( it seems out of proportion to the house ) Bring it out further and have a fire pit and built in seating.

Start with your siding and windows first.

One color will make your house look cohesive. Then develop a landscaping plan with foundation shrubs and perennials mulch, groundcover that work in your planting zone. Consider a planting bed around your lonesome tree--smaller but make the most of it.
