It depends on where the beams are located and the space between them. We have Velux Solar and love them.

What does that mean? Why do you feel you need skylites? Is this an addition or a reno? What does the outside look like (elevation and roof)?

Need to make sure your roof structure / rafters 24" on center can support a skylight.

Once you confirm structure, option 1 is your best bet. Running them close together and not leaving one joist bay creates overlap issues in the flashing kits as well.

Waht reason for the skylights ? IMO they only give light at a time when you have daylight form the wall of windows and at night the best bet is good overall layed light in the space . You have a small space very easily lit for nightime . I need more info. I assume it is the sloped area you want for the skylight IMO just add a few more pot lights there on a dimmer if you like . I have had over the years too many clients with skylights thatleak, or need to have blinds to keep out the heat so I need to know why .

The newer designed units will last at least 20 years if installed properly. Maybe longer.

Low-e and UV control glass virtually eliminate the suns radiant energy. Will they be less thermally resistant than the drywall ceiling and insulation, sure.

My advise is to plan on mechanical shades. The sun might shine in directly where you are sitting and you might not want that.

If you home roof is constructed with a wood truss system, your abillity to install skylights may be reduced.

Thanks all! The structure can support the skylight installation(not truss). We like lots of lights and we do need to install mech shades so we can close them if too hot.
When we say enough space to avoid overlapping - I saw many pictures have them installed together, is that an issue?
