I grew some and they did not get anywhere near full size before winter. I planted them mid May and in late October none were thicker then a pencil. I planted seeds in my garden, they sprouted the very beginning of June. 75 days is Mid August.

They say 75 days to maturity. I am asking how these leeks did for others out there? Mine did not get full sun, tough to tell they had stuff around them that got harvested - over the entire growing season.

I think they got enough sun and I know the 75 days is "perfection" but I still have nothing worth picking well over 100 days later.

Hard to know what possible issues other than how much actual sunlight, or spacing.

The 75 days claim seems to be based on 75 days from transplant, but then over 100 days then should be enough to get some size. Maybe start seeds a little earlier so they have more time to grow roots before the heat of Summer.

As far as I understand it onions are self-compatible and they can pollinate themselves or cross pollinate with others. Even though you might get some viable seeds from one plant, the chances that it's going to produce quality seeds worth replanting are kinda low. Usually a population of 50+ plants is necessary for healthy genetic crossing. You could spend the few bucks on a seed pack next year to play it safe, but also plant some of your own saved seed just to see what happens.

Is Winter Dream a hybrid or open pollinated? The hybrid are supposed to be more dependable to head up. I just got back from Johnny's website and ended up spending $32. I ordered the Cheddar (7.95 for 50 seeds...yikes!) and went ahead and ordered 100 Carmen Pepper seeds and a pack of Escamillo peppers. Also a pack of King Richard leeks that were on sale for a buck. I have the Carmen and Escamillo already but was almost out of Carmen. The Escamillo I thru in just because I wanted to get my money's worth on the shipping.

Leek seeds arent germinating

I've done germination tests on leek seeds that I saved myself. At 3 years old I got 70-75% germination at about the 2 week mark. Not great but still good. I doubt the seeds you have are bad, especially since you are just barely starting to see sprouts. Give them a few more days and some others should follow. Agree with Peter that you should plant more than 6 seeds. Start 50 seeds and transplant them around the border of your garden. Rodney

Everything around it did fine and so did my other leeks, I planted them in 3 places with the same results. It was definitely later than I could have planted them and I will plant them earlier.

I was also guessing maybe from transplant but nevre read that anywhere. I figured at most add 25 days (33% more). 100 days from when they came out of the soil (June 1) is mid September. They were still smaller than a pencil at the end of Sept.

I am mostly curious if others have had success with that exact leek.
