Turn my craftsman into an English cottage!!!
Comments (7)There is a teeny craftsman down the street from me. They restored it a couple of years ago. I was absolutely fascinated with the colors and how great it looks. The main house is a wine color, the trim is a medium gray with a hint of purple. I'm not a purple anything, but this house is darling in it's new suit. I'll try and take a photo of it, has been raining for a few days and more expected. Please post a photo of yours if possible. Below is a link of colors from your era and style. My daughters little cottage has the metal awnings. If you do a search, these come up a lot. May give you some ideas. She wants to get rid of them, but I have this historic edge and think they will actually be worthy of leaving on for the future. Comments (20)fwiw, we owned a 3br/2ba 1950s ranch for 20 years. Purchased when we had 2, then had a 3rd. Looked to move but couldn't find a house that had rooms as big as ours and a nice corner lot. So we added a partial 2nd story master suite (bedroom, bath and sitting room). We already had a full set up steps going up to the attic, but no room to walk. Since the house was a built with old brick matching so that there wasn't a line was impossible, so we shingled the front and back of addition. DH boxed in the front porch column and did a shingle base. The front and back were the same - bay window that extended up to 2nd story bay window. We also added a smaller bay in the breakfast room. So brick and shingles can be done, but it's tricky in existing homes, imo. Our shingles and siding on the addition were painted the trim color. We began our addition the week of Spring Break. Several neighbors went to the beach, shocked to see a different house when they returned and that we were dried in after only a week. I won't post pictures since our house is different than yours. One thing I would change on your house is the shutters. They are too skinny for the window on the right. To size, they should each be half of the window. You could also add grilles to mimic divided glass windows, adds cottage charm. Add a chimney cap. The front porch posts could be beefier. Can't see the front door. We added a custom wooden (painted trim color) glass door to have open during the day. Kept the solid wooden door for at night/when away for security purposes. Larger front porch light. Maybe pretty house numbers or a mailbox next to the door (for looks). I agree landscaping will also make a big difference. I think the house is charming and is a good start already towards your goal....See MoreFrench/English country, French/English cottage, cottage, shabby chic
Comments (26)I just wanted to chime in to say that I've seen pictures of homes with doors and window sashes that are unpainted wood paired with trim work that is painted, and I thought it looked beautiful. Basically, anything that opened/closed/moved was unpainted wood, and the rest was painted. So that's something to consider as an option. I wished I'd thought of that option before we went with all wood trim and doors in our main floor living areas and all painted trim and doors upstairs (bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry room). We have lots of stained wood (trim, doors, built-ins, etc.) on our main floor, so I understand the challenges of decorating around it and finding colors that work with it. But when you find the right colors to bring out the best in your wood AND give you the vibe you want, it's worth the challenge. There were times (after spending too much time looking at trendy design magazines or web sites) when I second guessed our decision to go with so much wood, but I've come to love it more over the years because of its character and richness. I grew up in a house that had unpainted fir paneled walls in every room (even the bathroom, though the walls in there were varnished), so for a long time I just longed for light, bright, painted walls. After having those for years living on my own, I guess I finally came around to appreciating natural wood again....See MoreExterior Colors for a Charming Cottage ????
Comments (5)Oh, how I wish you had posted before you installed the windows. Your home has a Storybook Style vibe (chimney / curved walk). Suggest you Google "storybook style homes", study their color schemes, and go from there....See More- 2 months ago
