Differences between English Cottage and Swedish Country Design
Comments (11)As requested, here are some pics of my color scheme. Library...just finished painting the accent wall behind the sofa in a deep eggplant color which offsets the new art work nicely. Kitchen is now a rust color paint with the warm cherry wood cabinetry and the beige tones in the backsplash and caesarstone counters. I'll have to take more pictures...most that I have are with the phone camera with terrible resolution especially when uploaded here. When I do, I'll post them. The dining room walls are BM pearl harbor, which I used on the ceiling in the library as both are open to each other. The walls in the library are BM dark beige. The foyer is open to the library so I used the dark beige on the ceiling in there and the pearl harbor on the walls...reverse of the library....See MoreCountry Cottage Style
Comments (8)That's a clean, cozy kitchen. I've seen in recent decor mags, that Aga has a purple stove. Oh, be still my heart. lol I would love to have one. I, too love cottage decor. I lean toward a southern France or Tuscany cottage look. I like to pretend I live on a little stone cottage in the middle of a vineyard in Tuscany. I'm slowly shifting all my decor toward that end. One of the things I love about cottage is painted furniture. Lately, I've been obsessed with painted wood. lol My husband is not a painted wood fella. Sigh. I love beach cottage decor, too. Even though I live a land-locked life. No photos at the moment for you and no time to look...I'm supposed to be finishing a brochure for a deadline tomorrow. ;0)...See MoreWhat is the difference between cottage and country?
Comments (29)I think there is definitely a fine line between country and cottage. I also think beadboard has now crossed over and is traditional, country, cottage, vintage, etc. I guess beadboard could be considered timeless and looks good in almost any design scheme, except super modern. When I think cottage, I see images of more pastel colors than with country. I also see more delicate flowers and painted furnishings. Now mind you, this is in my mind, it's nothing scientific. LOL In my new house I'm seeing traditional country for living area, country with modern accents for master bed and bath, old New Orleans for guest bath, cottage for guest bedroom, traditional for kitchen, vintage/traditional for foyer and traditional for office. In realizing my confusion for design and need to have all designs in one house, I suppose I won't be winning any design awards anytime soon. LOL In a year we can look back and see if I was able to pull all of this off in one house. HA!...See MoreHow to pull off layering patterns English country style?
Comments (21)Okay, thanks for the comments and suggestions so far. I will continue to look for additional upholstery options when my fabric arrives. @hamamelis I agree that keeping things in the right range will be necessary to pull of the look I desire. I do want to incorporate some leather and will have to be careful about how dark I go. @my3dogs: once the new drapes are up I will evaluate the lace curtains. I'm sure not everyone's a fan of them (they are just polyester from JCP), but they do look nicer in real life and the pattern doesn't read quite as strong. They are essentially the same color as my walls and just kind of blend in. I love the English country rooms you posted the link to. Being realistic I'm not ever going to have anything that traditional or well furnished. Those rooms, while beautiful, have far too many accessories for my household. Also, my space is an open concept living/dining/kitchen which changes things I think. @anglophilia: jeez. I'm not furnishing a museum requiring period pieces. I'm decorating my suburban, new construction home on a modest budget. Do forgive me for shopping at hobby lobby. I happen to admire what I would describe as English country and I'm trying to pull off a watered down version of it, something that leans more feminine and is overall light and airy. Maybe the term English cottage would be better, although I don't think it's really necessary....See Moreaprilneverends
