landscaping for house

We got hit by a tornado in March of 23 lost 29 trees and crushed our house. Now that we got our house put back together we need help on shrubs. What kind and where I would very much appreciate any suggestions. We live in North Alabama I believe it is zone 6. We have lots of DEER

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and glad your house is back together. Love those tall trees. there is a guy constantly showing up in my feed on YouTube, he is an Alabama native plant enthusiast for sure. I think he has credentials in forestry. I need to find a video and get his handle for you. Do a search for Alabama native plant enthusiasts. For choosing new landscaping, you can simply look at what is growing around your neighborhood and head to the big box store, or, you can take a dive. Get a soil sample kit and send it away for professional analysis, following the directions on how to take good samples. Get gardening magazines for your region and make a list of different plants that catch your eye. Those mature trees could offer shelter and dappled shade that is coveted for magnolias and many other ornamental shrubs. Take your time. Consider your soil, light levels and budget. Have fun!

It's a vast improvement over the shrub-engulfed house we first saw, merely by being cleaned up. One thing that jumps out to me as not enough, is the groundcover, which are few and far apart. The goal is usually to get groundcover to grow into a solid mass for the best look and so as not to need top dressing with mulch anymore and still have weed suppression. But I imagine you'll be doing some tweaking over the next year. As far as watering, it's hard for someone, by remote, to tell you if you've watered long enough. There are a lot of variables in how you might be doing it and with what equipment. If in doubt, dig down and see. It won't take you long to discover the right timing formula.

Jerry, it really depends on the sun/shade situation. No one can say you are doing wrong without knowing more. Can you post a picture? Using a photo share account like photobucket.com (free) can help with letting others have a better sense of what you're dealing. Also, consider getting in touch with your county's master gardeners. I would leave it in place permanently :-) Both the newspaper or cardboard will degrade and eventually disappear so there is no need to remove. But how long it will take to actually smother the grass, killing the root system, may take a bit longer than you expect. That doesn't mean you cannot plant in it before it is fully dead - only that the ability for the grass to resprout if it is disturbed is increased if the roots have not yet been fully killed off. I'd check after a couple of weeks but a month or even two should give much better results.

Vine of a freestanding trellis? Which depends on how great of an area you need to block. Virginia creeper is evergreen if you want something for year-round coverage. Smaller perennials around the base of the trellis could provide some added interest.

Thank you we lost 34 big hard wood trees during the tornado so our house looks bare now

you are not in zone 6 but more likely zone 7a or 7b (usda). no part of alabama is a zone 6 according to my maps. originally from lauderdale co.

i have used dwarf yaupon hollies as foundations plants. just basic green but evergreen and seldom need pruning.

Put in your zip code and it will tell you your zone. If you are up on a mountain, you moy be a bit cooler. My son is usually 10* cooler than I am.
