landscaping for house

last month

We got hit by a tornado in March of 23 lost 29 trees and crushed our house. Now that we got our house put back together we need help on shrubs. What kind and where I would very much appreciate any suggestions. We live in North Alabama I believe it is zone 6. We have lots of DEER

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and glad your house is back together. Love those tall trees. there is a guy constantly showing up in my feed on YouTube, he is an Alabama native plant enthusiast for sure. I think he has credentials in forestry. I need to find a video and get his handle for you. Do a search for Alabama native plant enthusiasts. For choosing new landscaping, you can simply look at what is growing around your neighborhood and head to the big box store, or, you can take a dive. Get a soil sample kit and send it away for professional analysis, following the directions on how to take good samples. Get gardening magazines for your region and make a list of different plants that catch your eye. Those mature trees could offer shelter and dappled shade that is coveted for magnolias and many other ornamental shrubs. Take your time. Consider your soil, light levels and budget. Have fun!

Hey Madhookup, Quite simply, this sign just needs an update. As you can see in this picture - an arborvitae, american holly, or leland cypress would look much better acting as a solid color backdrop which will bring out the rock in the sign. Solid roof patio cover will give the best shade although more costly than a flat open beam structure with say shade screen over the rafters. Depends on whether you want full shade or filtered sun. Make it big enough (12x12) so it actually functions. Design it around what you are going to put under it, i.e. a sit around table and chairs? Just chairs? Remember the sun angles change during the year with the best shade in June midday directly below the cover. Other times of the year and during the day, the sun will penetrate below the line of the cover. You can always put retractable shades on the west facing side if you tend to use it late afternoon. Why build a patio cover if it only provides a little bit of shade? A solid roof patio structure (gazebo or ramada) must be designed to handle the snow load and be pitched sufficiently for runoff. Plus you say you get high winds, so the posts must be braced to withstand the wind. See if you need a building permit for a free standing patio cover before you start to design it. I am not a big fan of using trees as the only solution when people say they want shade. Do you want to wait a few years before you will get any kind of useful shade? Build the patio cover and then plant shade trees on the south and west sides of the structure to help with different sun angles.

Crabapples smell heavenly but attract bees. Great for adding oomph to cider, sauce and jam if you make such things. I planted a crab for both scent and apples, and it was just about to bear but I FORGOT that apples and juniper/cedar have a bad relationship, as both harbor "cedar apple rust" and I didn't have a resistant variety. Like a dummy I planted them next to each other and I got the rust on both. It is horrible, rusty colored goo on the juniper that makes it look like a horror movie, and blighted leaves on the apple. Both came out the end of that year. They were planted too close anyway. If you're just looking for flowering and ornamental value, it might be worth your while to search out for a flowering hawthorne. I have seen some around my town that were gorgeous. You still have the little apples but they stick on the tree a lot longer. Wildlife likes them, which may or may not appeal to you if you're trying to PROTECT your fruit trees in the back from critters!

Path width can be used to indicate main entry vs. secondary doors. So the path to the main door and its associated stoop or landing would be wider. Narrower paths could lead to the less used doors or patios in front of them. From the photo, it looks like the current entry roof will limit the size of the entry landing unless it is all on one level that spills out from under the roof. I wouldn’t want to limit the entry landing to the space under the roof as it would look pinched I think compared to the house proportions. Just a thought to consider before everything is finished.

Thank you we lost 34 big hard wood trees during the tornado so our house looks bare now

you are not in zone 6 but more likely zone 7a or 7b (usda). no part of alabama is a zone 6 according to my maps. originally from lauderdale co.

i have used dwarf yaupon hollies as foundations plants. just basic green but evergreen and seldom need pruning.

Put in your zip code and it will tell you your zone. If you are up on a mountain, you moy be a bit cooler. My son is usually 10* cooler than I am.
