I have Verizon and its working. I heard on the local news that others around here are out, especially ATT. Hope you‘re back up and running soon

Have you tried making a phone call over your home's Wifi? Does that work?

I have AT&T...so far no problems...I also heard that there are several others having

the same problems......I also heard Verizon and T-Mobile...but they denied it. LOL

Seems to just be I-phones so far? More happening in the middle path of the

Country right now and that wouldn't cover mine.

Nope, cell coverage is fine, Verizon has always been great for us.

Tello is fine. $9 a month. They have cheaper plans. I also have Wifi.

I was up for a bathroom break at 4 AM and read it on CNN then. I checked my own Verizon phone, it was fine. DH's phone was turned off and on the charger, I didn't look at it. We have a Century Link land line (that is considerably more than $10/mo, vgkg!) and it had a dial tone. Very few middle of the night phone calls with my mother gone now. If it does ring, I'm awake in a heartbeat expecting it to be one of the nurses from my mothers senior care residence still and its been two years! 😊 Almost nothing wakes me other than the reason I was up at 4 AM, and that bedside landline phone.

Mine is working fine. I have Verizon. I didn't know about the outage so I called my better half at work to make sure he was OK. We text each other in the morning and I got worried not hearing from him. Never knew he had ATT.

T-Mobile here in ohio, so far so good. My sister thinks it's Putin doing this??? I sure hope not.

Elmer I saw that suggestion on the news too (hook up via wifi) but our cell (flip) phone is really only used when we're on the road or if the power is out at home (kills the hard line). I just now tested it and they fixed the problem, at least here.

I read that the problem is fixed though they don't say what happened. It would be kind of hard to connect to wi-fi considering the Internet was also out. I suppose you could go to some store and use theirs if it wasn't also ATT. But, as I said, supposedly everyone's cell service and Internet service has been restored.

Telephony (and SMS messages) over Wifi is for sure available with almost all smartphones but perhaps not with flip phones.

We have AT&T for phones and Wifi. Our phones were not working for most of today, but our internet was. Wifi calling did not work for us though. Not sure why as I often use Wifi calling at home anyway. All is well now though.

I have AT&T cable for my home office, and Wi-Fi, and it worked perfectly today.

Cricket was also affected, and I did not have mobile service. This is not a big problem for me. Child and I communicate via Discord, typically texting. If we needed to, I could have streamed a call on Wi-Fi through Discord.

Everything else I did today, I did in person. Oh, I couldn't look up where to find paper lawn bags at Home Depot like I would have normally done. That's the worst it affected me

My cell phone is AT&T. There was no outage on it best as I'm aware.

My cable Internet is via a Comcast reseller/partner that operates under a different name. It was down when I woke this morning until between 12:30p and 1:15p. I didn't notice exactly when the restoration occurred. Tech support robo-announcement (via a cell call at 9:25a) said they're working on it. I used cell data for a few minutes to check a few things. Internet went down again at 2:50p (during streaming General Hospital). Restored in less than 2 hrs, I had a nap so don't know the exact time.

Cricket doesn't have its own cell network. It uses the very same one operated by its parent AT+T for its direct customers. So what affect A also affects C.

Cricket is just a brand name for sales and marketing, it's AT+T with a different name.

It was only ATT ... they rolled out a massive software update that went south. Even some emergecy service was out. Some places for 11 hours ... and they want to abandon copper for landlines ... sheesh

According to this Washington Post article (which, if behind a paywall, someone will help free it), barely 25 percent of Americans still have a landline. And the number is dropping.

Landline customers - who are they?

Those who want some degree of backup can always use the internet to stand in for their cell coverage. How - telephony over Wifi with a smartphone, Skype over Wifi, Ooma, FaceTime over Wifi, a VOIP service (Voice over IP, whether from an independent provider or the cable or ISP provider), etc. And other possibilities.

Phone companies in many areas are required to make POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) available to every address. AT+T, formerly PacBell, the main "phone company" in California, has asked to be relieved of this obligation. Watch this trend spread to other areas that require coverage. It's a service no longer in demand and no longer profitable.

At $20, my landline is a negligible portion of my overall communications bill. While my ringer is muted and I don’t accept incoming calls on it - mostly junk - I prefer the the tactile keys for navigating through menues, the sound clarity for long calls, using it rather than speaker when I need to use ”smart” functions while on a call, and using it to call and find my cell phone. If it were much more than $20 I’d have dropped it.

I believe it Bragu, at the beginning of the week, we could not access ATT email for three days. If you tried to go to their log in page, you simply got an error message saying "something has gone wrong...blah blah blah" Then just out of the blue it went to the log in page like normal...almost like normal because I could tell there were subtle differences in the log in page now. Could not get any answers as to what was going on. At ATT customer service, no one ever really knows what's going on. I'm happy to not have ATT phones or Internet anymore!

Food, do as you wish. As an alternative - you can pay $80 for an Ooma Telo device, connect it yourself to your router and plug in your existing phone, and have a "landline" for about $3 a month. Break even in about 5 months, money ahead thereafter.

I've had one for over 10 years and have saved many thousands of dollars vis a vis continuing with the phone company. Call quality is excellent and free nationwide calling. Is that enough dough to get your attention?

I forgot to turn my cell phone back on yesterday until about 5 PM (I turn it off every evening about 8 PM), and so I don't know whether I had service or not. This morning I got a text message from AT&T apologizing for any loss of service I may have had, but they did not say whether I actually did lose service. I might have, but I didn't notice.

I seldom make (or receive) phone calls, and I almost never use text messaging. I am much more likely to use email than texting, as it is much easier for me.

You can "port" your existing landline number to the Ooma device if you want. $40 charge and it can take a week or two. That way, there's no change in your phone number so whoever uses that number to contact you can continue to, no change. Or you can get a new number for free.

The setup is pretty straightforward, and the instructions are clear (as I remember).
