Load bearing wall vs steel beam support
Comments (14)As I said, most new basements around here are finished, so I use the bearing walls. It is cheaper around here, otherwise I would do wall infills. A thickened slab is acceptable for residential applications. A 2x6 wall typically sits on a roughly 2' wide, tappered about 8-12" thick with 2 #4 or #5 depending on loads. No forming or separate footer pour is required, especially since I also typically use SFPF. And also, around here yet again, lvls are cheaper then steel. The only time steel is used is if we need to span a greater length while keeping the depth to a min. Lose some future flexibility? Possibly, but then again, I only use bearing walls if the basement has a plan. If its left unfinished/undesigned, beams and posts it is....See MoreMy Guest Room/Tufted Headboard Update (pics)

Comments (31)Hey, thanks again for the input! Oh, and before I forget -- Deborahnj, little Tristan is doing beautifully! He's growing and thriving and is a cute little butterbean of a baby. Thank you for asking! :-) I know it sounds unbelievable that we could get a king mattress up the stairs, but not a headboard. Well, that's because a mattress bends! Not so with a headboard! And no, the little niche that you see just to the right of the bed is not a full size that you could fit a bed within. It's just a little bump-in that houses a small closet: I've actually looked on Craig's List for a pair of twin headboards that we could make work, but haven't found anything yet. I'll keep searching, though -- eventually something is bound to pop up! Thanks again for the wonderfully creative ideas! You've all given me a few more options to chew on. :-)...See Moredo you have a tall headboard?
Comments (33)The off center placement will be tricky, but the other option is to switch walls, and place the triple dresser there. You will see the dresser upon entering the room, and the headboard to the bed will be to the wall to your right as you enter, or opposite the dresser. Here's the dresser: which is nearly 6 feet wide. and this is the opposite wall to where the bed is now, and also the room entrance: (none of those items will stay in the room) I have already purchase long, green curtains in a faux dupioni silk material (Target!) and will hand them on a dark turned wood rod (yet to be bought)....See MoreMaureen
