Comments (27)Thank you all for the well wishes. She is doing ok for what she has going on. It's eye opening and yet another reminder to age as well as we can. Hospitals and rehabs are not great places to spend a lot of time. She was dr avoidant and anti meds for most of her life, but that just left her with some health issues she just didn't treat - like a way underactive thyroid and high BP. I think those probably played into her current situation. Luckily, the care this time around has been spread between the hospital and my siblings, so we've got a good schedule going. I have been able to exercise and sleep. Part of my new sleep routine is reading a real book before bed, instead of looking at my phone. Right now I am reading this. It's really interesting in that it has actual assessments and plans for improvements. I honestly think I am in decent shape, but the assessments said otherwise:) I feel like I'm agile, but not in these ways I guess. So, lots of mobility issues to work on. I also really like my new 800 gram challenge. I do better with number goals it seems, so instead of just saying eat more fruits and veggies, this is a concrete goal in addition to the 30 different plan products. I relied a lot on nuts and seeds for that, so this is indeed a challenge for me. I have been eating a lot more fruit, which I didn't really eat because of spikes on my CGM. I will have to see how that works when I wear one again, but for now I'm going with it. I do think the fruit reduces other cravings and not great for me foods. I just make sure to eat it with other fiber and fat to hopefully slow down the effect. @gsciencechick -good work on your A1C - sounds like you are headed in a great direction. @jill302 - maintaining is often harder than losing. Good work!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 2/25/2024
Comments (22)Yes! Reducing stress is a part of a healthy lifestyle! Good for you, Springroz! I hope to get some of my stress under control ... just extended an offer to a person to fill one of my team roles. That should help. I also try to start the day before 5am and that helps soooo much. I get so much done in the quiet of the early morning. I am doing fairly well with eating this week and good but not great with my water consumption. I have NOT gotten outside and active 3x this week. Not even once. I woke up this morning and got dressed for an early walk-- and was bummed to discover it is raining pretty heavily. It is still dark out so maybe it will stop or slow soon. (edited to add that I checked the weather and it is going to continue all day.. boo. I will see if there is a lull later this morning ... if not, maybe I will jump rope on the covered patio) I did indulge last night-- I got my BIL 60 fancy pance burgers for his 60th birthday. I gave him a "burger comparison" kit from the same company for christmas last year and this year I did the same again for all of my siblings. I knew he (and his whole family) love them ... also knew his favorite was the dry aged beef so I ordered them as well as a new blend of brisket and short rib. Last night they had me over for cocktails and burgers (I've been sending them as gifts for 2 yr but never had one for myself!). We had the brisket and short rib burger with mushrooms on an onion roll. Very much a caloric splurge but omg! It was soooo good! I didnt eat prior to going over so I basically put all my calories into that burger (and salad) lol. It was so worth it. Everyone liked the short rib and brisket -- and really, it was *very* good but they all agreed that the dry aged burgers are significantly better. I will be going over next week for the dry aged version! I will have to be especially good all this week-- and maybe commit to 4 days active and outside! Aside: I have to say, the 60 burgers was a last minute gift idea ... but it was a perfect. He knew it was from me as soon as he saw the debragga box delivered lol ... but he was definitely surprised and delighted to find 60 burgers! GS .. feeling strong is a win! I have lost a lot of strength this last 10 yr and especially the last 5 yr. I am eager to get that feeling back. You and Feathers are inspiring! A workout at lunch? It sounds so refreshing! How was your week? Pretty sure I haven't lost weight but I feel good about making better choices (even with the indulgent burger last night!)...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 3/10/2024
Comments (15)Funky, I ate at a restaurant similar to what Clean Eatz looks like a month or so ago. It's called True Food Kitchen, and they have locations around the country. I was surprised at the quality of food for a reasonable price. I don't recall what I had, but I do remember thinking I could probably take half of it home and serve it over greens and quinoa or something. There were ways I could "stretch" the meal itself with healthy fillers. It's great that options like these are becoming more available. Legomom, I haven't eaten at Chipotle in several years, but it was a family favorite when my kids were younger and in sports. I recall getting the bowls, and would divide it in half and serve each half over more lettuce and added salsa for fillers. That might be an idea, and technically would spread out the seed oils/plastic exposure. I understand your concerns there. I recently switched to loose leaf tea because of microplastics in many tea bags. I found a great local source, but guess what? The bulk tea is sold in plastic bags. And last night I watched the What the Health documentary on Netflix, and now I don't know what to eat anymore. It seems all of our food sources have been compromised in some way. But the documentary did include Dr. Michael Greger, who I follow on IG and who my trusted dietician friend recommends as someone who's advice is science-based. He helps run this site: https://nutritionfacts.org/ It's a rabbit hole, though....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 3/24/2024
Comments (26)Jojo - I am sure you are experimenting this week and I hope you find some successful foods. I will say, oatmeal is the first thing that gets either skipped for breakfast or modified a great deal when people first start wearing a glucose monitor. It is known for its sudden glucose spike. Accompany that with two pieces of toast and the sudden spike followed by a sharp fall could certainly have you feeling that way. I do best with fat, fiber and protein for breakfast, but sometimes I will have oatmeal. But only 1/3 cup mixed with 2 T chia seeds and some cinnamon and walnuts, along with breakfast chicken sausage for protein. I'm trying very hard to minimize my processed food, and it is so hard for me. I really do enjoy eating out and snacking. I need to cook more, but it takes so long :) And I can never figure out what to make. Today I thought I was doing well, but I still had a Papa Steve's Bar for breakfast and Masa chips with my avocado. Now, technically papa steve's has no junk and the Masa chips are made with beef tallow instead of seed oils, but they are still processed in some manner. I will keep trying to eat more whole foods! I am very good with fruit and nuts, so there's that :) I have been walking this week and got in several hours of pickleball and one strength training workout, so that part is going well. The podcast I listened to today said 20 minutes 3 times a week for strength training, and after that the returns start to diminish. I can do that - 20 minutes is nothing in my day. I am going to try harder to be more consistent with that....See MoreFunkyart
