So you are replacing the cabinets? What brand would you be replacing them with? Because that limits you to their offerings.

you aren't painting thermofoil. You could replace all the doors and side panels. But by then you could just buy new cabinets for about the same money.

If it were my kitchen, I would look for a color that goes well with Evergreen Fog - possibly another grayish green, possibly a lighter mix of EF, or even a green that leans away from gray - or a blue, or blue-green (I actually would be strongly looking for a lovely complementary blue or blue/green). There are also whites with hints of color - blue or green in your case. Of course it would also have to work with the classic gray, unless you are open to painting that wall also (BTW, gray does tend to bring out any yellow tone, as does lighting with a color temp <3000K)

You can start by visiting the S-W website and use the color tools to get suggestions for complementary colors. Then, go to the S-W store, and start pulling paint chips that seem to work well with Evergreen Fog - And don't limit yourself to S-W, go to stores that sell Valspar (my kitchen walls are Valspar Ante-Meridian, which I love), BenMoore, Behr. Any color you find can probably be closely approximated in whoever you choose that has a good paint made for cabinets.

You will need to peel off the plastic shrink wrap and paint the particle board underneath. Or buy new doors and cover panels to replace the existing.

Better plan bigger and more. You can not paint plastic wrapped cabinets like that and expect them to last longer than a year. If that.

ikea components are set up to replace the doors with newer versions...and they do roll out new fronts. Have you been in their kitchen display area lately? Your kitchen could be nice with a two tone approach...its quite long and the counter/backsplash is plain jane...that will allow something if you want to get creative.

You might try swapping the recessed lights for those with 4000K color temperature. If you look at the first picture, you see how much whiter the lower left-hand cabinet illuminated by the window appears than those illuminated by the ceiling lights.

I agree with others that if you try and paint ikea cabinets, they will be peeling in a week. Not possible. It would also be very expensive! For much less money, I would go to Ikea and look at your replacement options. It would be very easy to swap them with new doors assuming your kitchen is less than ten years old (or whenever they switched to the new system). Another fix would be to replace the backsplash, which is reading very cool grey white and I think making the cabinets look yellow. A new backplash would also be less than painting. After you make one of those changes, I would also get rid of the green wall paint. Which is also making the cabinets read yellow. But ultimately, unless you replace the cabinet doors, you have to work with those cabinets by changing the other color features in the room.

Even if the OP has a new IKEA Sektion kitchen, he would need to replace not just the doors and drawer fronts but the matching deco strips and cover panels. This webpage describes how to tell the difference between the obsolete Akrum system and the current Sektion system. Sektion doors cannot replace Akrum doors but one could replace Akrum doors and drawer fronts with third party products from several manufacturers.

I think OP needs to tell us if they are thermofoil OR painted - some of the budget doors (which this was) are lacquered which would be easy to sand/paint. I think changing out all the other whites (trim, door, etc.) to be a matching yellow white would help the situation but that's a big job too.

Wondering if anyone has done that, peeled off thermofoiil of their whole kitchen? I had a spare door that Im experimented on - the thermofoil came right off in big sheets and the clean bare MDF underneath was super easy to paint and get a smooth surface ..... but Im leery to try this with the whole kitchen for fear they wont all be as easy!

There is a way to paint the IKEA cabinet faces. It's less expensive than new faces, but there is a huge amount of elbow grease involved in doing this correct. It all depends on what your time is worth. I doubt this is a weekend project.

If the IKEA cabinets are from the Sektion system, then you can simply purchase replacement doors and drawer faces. If the IKEA cabinets are from the old Akrum system like mine are, then you can purchase new replacement door and drawer faces from Semihandmade.

I think the vertical grooves in the face of your cabinets are going to drive you crazy if you paint them without a paint sprayer.

Before you do anything, make sure you have led lighting that is at least 3500-4000 daylight type bulb. Your lighting looks a bit yellow, and can make the cabinets look very yellow. I like the evergreen fog paint, in your dining area, but, the classic gray in the kitchen, really doesnt go well at all with your floors, or the counters. The kitchen looks like it is nicely done. New light bulbs, could very well change it so you like it too.

The doors are not thermofoil, they are lacquered. We have 4000 daylight in the kitchen- that’s how yellow the cabinets come across.

My IKEA white cabinets yellowed. If you check on line, you'll learn it's a common complaint that the IKEA white cabinets yellow.

I have read that people have taken their doors to an auto body paint shop and had the doors painted there. I'd at least look into that and get price.

Re that lighbulb thing, if the overall appearance of the room is too "yellow," then, yeah, a higher K light will help, but if its a matter of one thing looking more yellow than everything else, then the cooler, i.e. more "blue" light is going to accentuate the difference and make it stand out even more. Either way, I still would get the daylight bulbs to help better assess the situation and help you decide on new colors.

BTW one benefit of painting is you would not be limited to boring white - I could see these cabs in some version of gray-green.

Thank you everyone! We are not new to projects - my husband is a contractor and we have done many upgrades ourselves already, and not afraid of some hard work. I don't hate this kitchen, I just hate how the cabinets have yellowed (again, we bought the house with them in this condition). We are also looking at changing the backsplash, but again having a tough time finding something that won't clash or make the yellow more prominent. We have an extra cabinet that is in our basement, so I think we are going to test that with the methods we've found (sand, shellac primer, paint) and see how that goes before committing.
