Kitchen cabinet paint colors
Hi everyone! This is a crosspost, but eld6161 suggested I post here for more help :)
I have been through the ringer trying to replace badly faded walnut cab fronts in my midcentury kitchen. I have decided NOT to do any wood, due to the fading. I do have some pinkish colored rock walls in the house.
I just cannot come up with a color. So far I’m down to:
-a darkish green island with slats, white top, colored floating cabs, white appliance cabs, peach/pink small enclosed cabinet were shelf is.
-all white
-mint for the island (? not sure of a color for other cabs)
-pink for the island or floating cabs - maybe match with pink for exterior wood slat walls

Forgot to add, I also have a bar, 11 foot long pantry cabinet and butler pantry to do, but I feel once I get the kitchen dialed in those ill be easier.

Comments (12)They are nice cabinets! Before you paint, try changing the bulbs in your ceiling lights to at least 3500 K or above (less yellow light). You will probably like the whiter light even if it doesn't help your perception of the cabs. Also, if it is not something that you do regularly, give the cabinets a deep cleaning - a fine layer of oil will settle on them when cooking, and oxidizes to a yellow tone over time. I can't really tell from your pic what color the walls are - but certain colors will emphasize the yellow tones in wood, others will minimize them - you might ask a color consultant at a paint store for suggestions. I would avoid beiges. Do you like the color of the tile on its own? Does it go well with the floor? If you do decide to paint the cabinets, a creamier white likely won't make the tiles stand out - although apart from the wood, you might find their shade of yellow to be cheerful instead of drab. Also, look for inspiration photos of colors like bone white, sage green, blues, mushroom (gray-brown). Comments (9)small U shaped kitchens always look good in the "white treatment. " but you need high quality counters with some interest along with a great backsplash.......dont rule out an all over color as well. there is a possibility of darker on the lowers and white on the tops. Start to get pricing for painting cabs and counter/splash redo because you will want a cohesive coordinated look. there is a case to be made for leaving all the wood for sure. Maybe it boils down to your budget. Personally an all over color would be a wonderful counterpoint to your small but comfortable and attractive living room.....the kitchen is offset and 3 sided so a beautiful color there would be a treat if you know a color you like. Comments (26)Do you like the current colors in the rest of the downstairs space - the white wainscoting, trim, black rails and door, greige walls and Moss dining room? If these are your colors then I would continue with those same colors in the kitchen. Same white on the cabinets and same greige on the walls, black hardware. These colors look really good with your flooring. Hopefully they work well with the new countertop as well. If you are seriously considering changing out the cabinets in the future you may want to give some thought to the process and costs to figure out what to do in what order so that your not spending a lot of money on temporary fixes that you can live with for a year or two. Kitchen renovations can be horribly expensive and may not be totally necessary. Everyone has to figure out for themselves just how to prioritize their spending. Buy extra flooring now while they still make it (many styles/colors get discontinued in a year or two) so that you can change things in the future and not have an issue matching the floor. Decide now if you will want to change the layout of the kitchen or just replace the cabinets. Do the cabinets need replaced or just the doors and drawer fronts? How long until you will be replacing? Do you have the original painted professionally or DIY, knowing it only needs to last a year or two? Do you go ahead and order doors and drawer fronts and have the boxes painted professionally to match? Comments (5)it will be hard to marry the kitchen floor w the counters w another beige or cream paint shade . And there is enough of those tones anyway...but numerous sample cards brought in might help you realize the goal.....if I were painting the cabs I'd move into a green color...light to medium .... start w sage , which isnt too gray. You dont really want cabinets to "match" counters when the floor isnt the same at all. Maybe describe what you mean by "match" to clarify.....Is this simple fatigue with the brown or is the finish needing redoing? If you start to notice the nuances of color you'll see how the alabaster suggested above doesnt align w the floor at all..and it has enough khaki or yellow , which will make the counters look peachy/apricot....so it gets quite difficult....you're better w a white but I'd shift to a real color as mentionned ....See Morerockybird

last yearHmm, I like the way the wood looks too - sorry. I think the dark color anchors the cabinetry/island and the wood grain adds a natural element to the room.
I wonder what a slightly lighter toned wood finish would look like? It doesn't necessarily need to be real wood either...

@fori I think I agree. It doesnt seem to be working I wonder if it’s because the space is too bright? I thought I got a very dark green, but it looks so bright I also got a couple peachy pinks I almost wonder if a whole island in that green would look obnoxious.
I tried to mimic a white countertop.

last yearHi mtn! Thanks for the suggestion! I’m only staying away from it because I used it in a small bathroom and for some reason it looks too saturated. I’m scared to do it again. I thought green looked good in this rendering I crudely made but it doesnt seem to in real life?

last yearI could do somethihg like this. I was hoping to avoid terrazzo because I’m worried about durability. I have this companies pavers which seem impervious to any stains. But I also have their bathroom tiles which I accidentally marked up when I used a clorox wipe that had 1% lemon in it.

This house reminded me of yours.I wish my house had the same architectural style as yours, but it doesn't, and houses here that do were way too expensive for me.

I’m going to give it one more shot at paint samples today - I’ll try a light pink, minty green, charcoal and a lighter yellow.
I thought about removing the cabinet fronts on the island where the stools are and replacing with a slab of terrazzo. The cabinets are very shallow and really useles.. But I’m worried the terrazzo might be too busy? I think they amount of stones they put in. They could also make just a slab of pink concrete. I have their pavers and theyve held up great, but the terrazzo floor I have from them etched when I used a lysol wipe on it with 1% lemon. I would want to do a porcelain counter on top.
Something like the the second pic but in a pink less busy terrazzo with the sides also being terrazzo.

last year@Kswl Thank you! I’m going to try to get another pink sample, lighter as you suggest. What do you think of this one? It’s a little lighter than the photo suggests.

@Arapaho-Rd Yes I was worried about this also. The cabinet co said they shouldnt fade. But the good news is it’s paint so it can be repainted. Only the island would be painted. The surrounding cabinets would be some sort of resistent material in white by fenix/rehau.rockybird
last yearlast modified: last yearMy other thought is to go all white with a salmon pink small upper cabinet. I have so many colorful things. And this would let the architecture and landscaping of the house be the focus, not the kitchen.
Or tile the back of the island?

Island - Either mint terrazzo with sparse or no rock for sides and back; terrazzo top with sparse rock or white counter for top. Or all white islandsmall cute horizontal floating cabinet by doorway - salmon pink or green fronts, white casing
appliance and floating cabinets - white
New miele ovens in white
invisacook cooktop (depending on price) or miele cooktop
bar- all white with desert bloom (light pink) tile backsplash
11 foot pantry cabinet - all white with salmon pink cut out to match little floating cabinet

@eld6161 those kitchens are amazing! Especially the second one! I have walnut in the butler pantry around the corner from the kitchen. I love that wood you posted better than walnut because it’s less busy. But I don’t want to contrast with the walnut I already have.
