How to dispose of elm wood...

I have a slippery elm sapling (about 10') that's growing RIGHT up against the foundation and will sadly need to be removed. However, I've heard you're supposed to chip or burn elm wood to keep dutch elm disease from spreading. I can't chip or burn at the moment--would tightly sealing chopped-up wood in sturdy leaf bags be enough?

contact your local county extension office and ask them for direction on such ...

were are you. big city name.. and are there any current law.. .or are you dealing with heresay??

i also wonder if you are confusing ash emerald ash borer protocol with dutch elm DISEASE .. chipping is usually associated with killing the bugs...

If the tree is not currently infested with beetles... you have little to worry about. They don't tend to attack dead wood after the fact. If the tree is still up and you can get it taken down before spring emergence- do it. Though they can overwinter in bark, they like to emerge for spring feeding on tender new bark. Taking the tree down while still dormant can help reduce that risk. And if you do have an infestation, you can spray the tree with insecticide- follow the instructions on the label.

Fortunately, a ten foot tall sapling isn't likely to be mature enough to be very attratctive to the beetle unless you are in a very infested area.

Bonita: I see your question was from January but had a couple of thoughts even if they are a bit late. Or did you plant something already? First we have ordered TONS of plants and trees from Forest Farm (link below) and you just cannot go wrong. Everything always arrives in a very timely fashion and well packaged. I have ordered a couple of plants from Gurneys and it has always been a nightmare. I'll never do it again. If you want lush plants that are the size described order from Forest Farm. They also have an unbelievable selection. On that note, we ordered six Thuja Green Giant trees from Forest Farm this year for the purpose of creating a privacy screen in the back yard. Although I thought they perhaps could have been a bit lusher they were nice trees, about five feet tall and very healthy. I would recommend these trees for being reasonably fast growing. In my experience with the five I have from a few years ago they don't grow three feet in a year like the hype says but they are lovely, tough little trees that make a hedge. Alabamatreehugger, that double trunk is likely what did this tree in...there is no sign of Dutch Elm Disease. Dsiber, according to the lady that we bought this lot from, it was planted by her Father soon after the yellow brick 3 story house in picture 6 was built in the very early 1900's. So the Elm is likely close to a century old. The wood was all left for burning by whomever we can give it to. Below is a pic of the pile. Anything small enough to go through the chipper/shredder, went through. Rhizo 1, nope, not a hard hat or glove among them.

I had a bit of a time getting rid of old trash cans at my vacation place. A friend bought me new cans and taped a note to the old cans that these were old and now are trash. The garbage people never took them, I think because they just reach into the cans and pull out the bags. They probably didn't notice the note, just that there weren't any bags in those cans. He tried a bigger note but by the time of my next visit, they were still there and the note was on the ground, all faded and waterlogged. Luckily, since I was there and heard the truck, I pulled the cans out and waited for the guy to ask him to take them away. I don't fault the garbage people, it's not always obvious which beat up old can is still in use or should be part of the trash. IMO, my friend bought too many cans, we have twice a week pick up so they're never too full, and now I'm trying to find a neighbor that might need a new trash can so I can get rid of one. Now that we also have curbside recycling, I doubt my friend and his family fill three cans, twice a week.

>>FWIW, I was told recently that construction waste and household discards go to different waste facilities, and shouldn't be mixed in a roll-off. IIRC, YMMV. This is true only if there are different landfills. The regulations are different for Construction Debris Landfills vs. general Sanitary Landfills which have more decomposable stuff and produce more leachate and landfill gas. So, again, check with your local waste disposal service. One thing you can sometimes do with concrete, masonry etc. is to offer it free as fill. Sometimes people need stuff to fill in a low spot or as erosion prevention on a slope, and this stuff is usually considered clean fill if not painted.

I wouldn't worry about it. There are going to be dead elms around you somewhere -- there are dead elms all the time around my area in forest and roadside edges. so I seriously doubt your one tiny 10 ft elm is going to make any difference.
