Alternative pine rootstock

Has anyone had success with alternative pinus rootstock? I'm in central North Carolina zone 7b/8a. The usual recommendation for five needle pines is Pinus Strobus (white pine) which has issues with the heat and humidity here. While it does survive once established it tends to struggle. Pinus Sylvestris for the 2 needle pines also has it's limitations. Has anyone experimented with the native loblolly (pinus taeda) or chihuahua white pine (pinus strobiformis) as an alternative? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
