More pond questions with pictures this time
Comments (13)Thank you for all the information. This is the first pond I've ever tried to put in and am learning as I go. This weekend I'll be going to a plant swap and one of the people attending is going to give me a couple books she used when setting up her pond. Hopefully they will help me understand more about some of the things you have all mentioned. I plan on getting a submersable pond pump and was under the impression that I could get one that includes a filter. Was I wrong? It's good that I can use the limestone as I have a lot of it and can always get more for free. The dirt in that part of the yard is a layer of good dirt and rotted mulch then a thick layer of builders sand (the orangeish layer and then about 2 feet down I hit the regular sand. The deepest that I've dug so far is on the side closest to the sidewalk between the two shelves is 2 feet. I may remove the one shelf but I'm not sure about that yet. I plan on the larger portion of the pond closest to the driveway to be at least 3 feet deep without any shelves. The sand drains well and is pretty well compacted. When it's dry it can be very hard, in fact when I was putting in the irrigation system in preperation for putting in the front flower I ended up having to use a pick axe in some areas in order to get through the builders sand. Of course we were in a drought at the time so the ground was very dry. I have gutters along the front edge of the roof so there should be little to no run off from the roof into the pond. There is a rain chain on that end of the gutter but I've been carefull to make sure that it will not overhang the pond. The hole in the gutter for the rain chain is fairly small as the main reason for the chain is to keep water from settling in that end of the gutter. I will need to have at least one shelf in the pond for access and for in case one of my cats, my mom's small dog or one of my young neices or nephews falls into the pond. I can really see the youngest of my cats falling in since she has a facination with water, as you can see in the picture. The person who gave me the river rock lives near Floral City in Citrus county....See MoreAny fans of Tsu Li, Ya Li or Sueri Chinese pears?
Comments (9)Hi all Found this old thread by searching for YaLi asian pear. I bought some at a high end fruit store recently and fell in love with Ya Li. Granted they need to be fully ripe to develop full flavor, but this is the only asian pear I've tried that has tart as more than just a hint of flavor near the core. Taste varied greatly with the 7 I bought. Only 3 had that wonderful sweet tart fully complex flavor. Based on seed size the fruit that was picked later was the best, the ones that were just mildly tart had small juvenile seeds compared the the large plump seeds found in the best fruit. so having found a new variety I must have wanted to ask for feedback on ease of growth etc for the Ya Li. I'd also like to hear other folks experience with Daisui Li as I have one that is entering 3rd leaf for me. First year the fruit were few but huge, with a very simple plain old pear flavor. I'm hoping that if I let them hang longer prepicking they will develop better flavor. Persimmon Bob, love to hear about DL's flavor. Mine has also been a healthy but brittle slow growing tree for me. Skipped fruiting year 2 but looks ready to grow many fruit this season. Pam in cinti...See MoreI lied!-question for pp divas
Comments (7)Lynn, That is why I love PP for some things -- because of the great results and the ability to make a "thing!" One tip I got from Mexico Marti that helped me tremendously was to make templates of the pieces and cut your fabric out based on that with about a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Ironically, when I use "huge chunks of fabric" I had MORE trouble covering the right space if the angles were odd. Wherease with a properly shaped piece, it was easier. Also, my Carol Doak instructions called for trimming the 1/4" seam allowance on the edge of the piece I was about to sew the next piece to BEFORE adding the piece to it. This seemed like an extra step, or out of order step at first. I thought -- why not sew them both together and THEN trim? But the benefit of trimming it first, is that it makes it much easier to line the next piece up properly along it's edge. And ultimately it goes faster when you're not taking it apart time after time to get it right! Hope this makes sense......See MoreIf I shake my head any more, it will fly off!
Comments (29)I asked her why she doesn't want to see him since she has liked him and she said that she doesn't like him anymore because he told her she would never live with her mom again. We sat her down and explained that he did not tell her that. I was there and heard what he told her and I reiterated what he said, which is that there are set family laws that the court MUST follow and that it's very hard to change custody. What the counselor told her is that her mom CHOSE to move away and that if she didn't ask the court to take her, but left her with her father... then the court is not likely to take her away from her father unless there is a good reason because it would punish her father since he had no say in her mother moving and it would not be fair to him. As long as dad wants her and is taking care of her, there isn't much her mom can do to change custody. And he added that the court instructed her mom to do an evaluation to see if there is a good reason to let her move to her mom's and her mom has CHOSEN not to do it... so, failing in school is not going to be a reason to change her to her mom, it's more reason to keep her at her dad's, where it's stable. I suppose her mom may have been so angry that she insisted SD should not go see the counselor and SD is now saying she doesn't want to go. When we were in the driveway, BM told me that I had NO business being there and I am not to go with her to her counselor. She called me a liar when I said SD asked me to be there and there is no point in even arguing with the woman. She wasn't there and just wanted to fight. She obviously doesn't care enough to come to school conferences or counseling appointments (DH had told her about it so she could be there) but she wants to control what is said or done at them.... or just cause a big ruckus, using them as an excuse. At this point, SD does not have any more appointments with her counselor but she will see him again if she needs it. She likes him and even she knows her 'excuse' was weak and it's her mother speaking. Her mother has no say in the matter unless she wants to take the time and effort to do something about it. I'm a little bit past caring that she is BM and worrying about stepping on HER toes!...See Moremtnrdredux_gw
