Shingle Selection for Old Brick?
Hello! We need to replace our roof after only 3 years due to hail and have to choose an Impact Resistant shingle. The colors seem so limited! Our roofer thinks we should do black - either GAF Charcoal or Certainteed Moire Black. We would change the accent paint color on the shake/beams to coordinate like an Iron Ore to better coordinate but it all seems 'heavy' for the brick. And painting the stucco or brick is not an option. Stucco color is SW Anew Gray. Any thoughts? Thanks!

3 months agoThe appeal for us at least is to make our old house look newer and more current. We are mainly looking at GAF shingles but can get any standard Impact Resistant shingle. I attached GAF's Weathered Wood image and their Charcoal - not sure either are great. Some of the Weathered Woods out there are more patchworked in color variation. We want something less distracting considering we have a lot going on with this exterior.

Comments (17)You've told me so much and you know the things you need to know. Like ignore all the "fertilize with K and P annually". In Knoxville, at the University, Ione planted a tea noisette, Duchesse de Auerstadt, in river loam about 100 yards from the Tennessee River. (I grow a clone of that, several hundred feet higher and in tight red clay. You'd think they were different roses, but they-from the same supplier- are in different microclimates and soils.) You are in the heat 'island' that is the Nashville Basin. Your soils are self fertilizing but for the N. If I were you, I'd collect Tea Noisettes and make the most bodaceously beautiful rose fence in Tennessee. I might even be tempted to put a few Hybrid Perpetuals in for splashes of red-purple color. Foget the once bloomers. With your water conditions, with the nutrients that are in your river soils, the only thing you need to do is work to keep your pH in the zone where the K and P aren't tied up as salts and stay available to your roses' roots. That you don't have abundant cedar, BTW, tells me that you don't have a lot of limestone anywhere near the surface. In my fields I can almost tell you where there are subterranean limestone remnants under the soils. Even the cedar seeds don't sprout in my red clay. As for trees to tolerate in your fenceline: yes to dogwoods and redbuds- they aren't that bad. No to almost everything else. In your soils with ground water, you may find ten to fifteen years of vertical growth each year. This year we are sufferening the ones we didn't cut back last fall and that loved the inch a week of rain we had all of last year. Kill: all hackberries (they make good firewood). They are the host to wooly hackberry aphids and the aphid poop drops heavily and then gets a black fungus on it and the fungus doesn't wash off. Comments (6)@HALLETT & Co. The original owner added the brick planter in the late 1980’s and they’re crumbling and safety hazard. I don’t think they offer any curb appeal. Especially the long planter to the right of the door, it seems odd. The smaller one near the garage is ok but not great shape either. The tall brick stacked next to the front door is original to the home, it’s staying put. We found out my husbands best friend’s great uncle had this home built and we have confirmed those aren’t original. Comments (13)My house has white vinyl siding, and it requires constant maintenance in terms of cleaning. We live in the country (we're farmers), and the white shows everything - especially cobwebs, dead (and live!) insects, and dust from the road and surrounding fields. It is especially bad around my entrances and windows (probably because that's where I see it close up). We power wash the house in the spring and fall, and I constantly clean my entrances by hand so that it looks respectable. The house we are building will have darker wood siding and a grey metal roof. I have no doubt that the darker siding will also get dirty, however I think it probably won't show up as much as it does on the white siding....See Moreelyse55

Very smart!
I think this exterior is actually Agreeable Gray, but a similar roof color might also work with Anew Gray. Agree with no black.

3 months agoI prefer the Weathered Wood sample you show to the charcoal. It seems like it would look nice with the brick. You may eventually need to address the fact that the finishes on the upper floor are cooler than the roof and brick, and a different color might work better. But the mismatch is small enough to leave alone meantime.
As for trim, I might wait until the roof is in. Darker trim could look nice, but you might decide to wait. Here are a couple of mockups that might help.
