Anyone know anything about Pomona Lemons?
Comments (15)The 1913 freeze killed most of the citrus in this area. LaVerne, Claremont, Upland along the base of the foothills and Pomona & Ontario in the flatter lands below. Tom Spellman lived in Upland and was the manager of LaVerne Nursery when they were still in LaVerne. He discovered a tree in Pomona that survived the 1913 freeze and propagated it as Pomona Sweet Lemon. Tom Spellman now works for Dave Wilson Nursery, which is why the descriptions from LaVerne and Dave Wilson sound the same. I bought two that were propogated by LaVerne mostly to try to determine if the sweet lemon growing in my backyard was that cultivar. I find them interesting at times and very blah at others. I would NOT buy one thinking you are getting a less tart lemon, as it is way, way less tart. However, Pomona Sweet Lemon mixes well with Eureka & Meyer for Lemonade....See MoreViolette de Bordeaux from Dave Wilson
Comments (41)Tissue cultured plants can be made virus, blight, and bacteria free in the process of propagation. However, if a nursery gets virus free tissue cultured trees and puts them next to ones that have the virus, then, they get it, too. I also see people on here complaining that it takes forever for TC figs to produce, or that they never do, or that you can take a cutting from one and the cutting will produce before the original tree. Another thing people complain about with TC plants is that they are tiny. They start out as a few cells. I have bought TC muscadines and the vines were about the size of a matchstick and the roots were in a bag with much less potting medium than a sandwich bag would hold. But they caught up with the same variety purchased at the same time in half gallon pots within 3 months. I have no reason to believe my fig trees are virus free, so I'm not worried about it. But if I was starting out, I would have nothing but TC plants guaranteed to be virus free....See MoreDoes anyone have anything good to say about Viking?
Comments (117)We bought entire suite of Viking Appliances 4 years ago. 36" dual fuel range replaced 3 times under warranty. Built in panal ready fridge replaced once. Built in dishwasher just had a pump replaced. Only 2 people live in the home. So glad I had extended warranty. Almost forgot the convection microwave replaced once and broke twice. I have no idea how reliable the other "premium brands" are. Appliances in the old kitchen were 25 years old still running....See MoreYear and pattern of this "1847 Rogers Bros" silverware?
Comments (20)I like rustic pates too. A bit of boasting. Here is my one-man dining set, with items moved closer together to get them all in one frame. All were culled in the past few months from my thrift-shop antique hunting adventures. The most expensive of them all was the silverware at $42 for 12 forks and knives. -- The plate is 13 inches across and is made of copper with silver plating peeling off. Judging by the concentric ridges, it looks like it was hand-turned. There are engravings around the lip. I am told it is probably from the arts and crafts era, 1875 to 1920s. -- The Rogers Bros. silverware rests atop a wooden box with metal accents. There is a mirror inside the lid, so maybe it was a make-up kit? Unsure of age. But I figured with the mini-treasure chest look I could justify it as a silverware holder. -- The pitcher/tankard holds 3 cups and is VERY heavy solid cast brass. Handle is welded on, not screwed or riveted. Unsure of a age but a local dealer told me it is probably at least 150 years old, maybe more. -- The trivet is also sold brass and from an estate (so the vendor tells me) of a family that had it for more than 100 years. I am told the pattern is still reproduced by Colonial Williamsburg. -- The tole is hand-painted metal. Unsure of age. But looks early to mid 20th century to me. Any guesses on age of these items are welcome....See Morebengz6westmd
