Comments (41)Tissue cultured plants can be made virus, blight, and bacteria free in the process of propagation. However, if a nursery gets virus free tissue cultured trees and puts them next to ones that have the virus, then, they get it, too. I also see people on here complaining that it takes forever for TC figs to produce, or that they never do, or that you can take a cutting from one and the cutting will produce before the original tree. Another thing people complain about with TC plants is that they are tiny. They start out as a few cells. I have bought TC muscadines and the vines were about the size of a matchstick and the roots were in a bag with much less potting medium than a sandwich bag would hold. But they caught up with the same variety purchased at the same time in half gallon pots within 3 months. I have no reason to believe my fig trees are virus free, so I'm not worried about it. But if I was starting out, I would have nothing but TC plants guaranteed to be virus free....See Moresummerstone nursery anyone?
Comments (20)I did a Google search looking for a Bosc pear tree and found the Summerstone nursery site. I called and asked if they had any in stock and they said yes. I told them that me and my wife would drive up and pick it up and they said OK. We made a 3 and one half hour drive and when we got to Morrison I called and asked for directions as I didn't see it anywhere. They gave me directions which turned out to be wrong. I stopped at a business and asked them for directions and they told me it was back in Morrison in the old part of town. I still couldn't find the place and stopped at the town hall for directions. The town clerks first question to me was did I give them any money yet. I told her no that I hadnt. She said, "DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THAT GUY AS THEY HAD BEEN GETTING COMPLAINTS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY". She even called the guy up and told him what she had told me. She told me that there was NOT a Summerstone nursery in Morrison and that the guy was running a scam operation out of a hole in the wall in s building in town. She said if I gave him any money I would never get it back! Do not do any business with Summerstone nursery. All we got out our day of dealing with them was a scenic drive to Tennessee. I filed a complaint with the BBB and found out that my complaint was the 302 complaint filed....See MoreClarke Bros & Co. Victorian Furniture IDENTIFICATION
Comments (10)I just came across your post while doing some family history research. My great-grandfather was Robert E. Clarke, and in 1874 when he was about 19 he set up a business with his slightly older brother George in Brooklyn where they lived. They called themselves "Clarke Bros. & Co." and had what they called a "Bracket Store" located on Fulton Street at the junction of Flatbush Avenue. I believe they published at least this one catalog (dated Fall 1875) which can be seen in its entirety, digitized on-line at http://www.archive.org/details/illustratedcatal00clar The business doesn't seem to have lasted beyond 1877. The family had left Brooklyn by 1878 and Robert became an actor and elocution teacher. I don't know what became of George. And, unfortunately, I don't know any more about this bracket & furniture business, but would like to!...See MoreStark Bros. dwarf and semi-dwarf - rootstocks
Comments (3)Stark Bros is a good nursery but one common complaint people have about it is exactly what you mention: they do not tell you the rootstock. If you want more good nurseries, you can check Tierra Madre, Once Green World, Womack, Maple Valley Orchard, Van Well, Cumberland Valley Nursery, Vaughn nursery (the last two are known for peaches). All the ones I mentioned, either I ordered them myself or heard good things about them from many posters. Stark has its own Stark tree varieties. I do understand that you'll have no choice if you want their particular variety....See MoreRelated Professionals
