I don't hear any coyotes around here any more.
Comments (5)"Progress". Years ago, our area was the same. This development was built in the late 60's on the outskirts of town and even though it basically still is, the landscape is changing all the time. There was nothing but fields and forest around here years ago. Now there's one development further out than us and more going up here and there all over the place. In the process more land was taken on top of the land used to expand roads and highways. It's not so bad where we've lost some of our typical nature sounds like our robins, owls, cardinals, cicadas and so on, but the feel is different. They tore down an old factory by the river 8 or so years ago that was supposed to remain as a park area where we used to see plenty of ducks, gulls and geese but it didn't take long for them to commercialize it with a restaurant, some shops, the obligatory CVS and leave us not forget the primo riverfront townhouses and condos. What I can't get over are the bloody drugstores. I grew up in a town that had a Rexall downtown on the corner. (Must be getting old. Spell check told me Rexall is spelled wrong.) Now, it's like some huge pharmacy giant just walks through the country, squats, and drops a CVS or Walgreen's here, there or wherever. The other thing that gets me about that is, whenever one builds the other is sure to build somewhere nearby....See MoreIs there no longer any decent way to search here?
Comments (37)I haven't read all the posts above. Here's what's just now worked for me: I wanted to find a thread from January about retablos. Lynn, Ida, and I participated. Maybe others as well. I didn't want to search through multiple pages, so I tried Googling, à la Mtn's suggestions. I got nothing. Then I put "retablos" in the "Search Houzz" box. Got nothing I was looking for. Put "Gardenweb.com/Discussions"; on the URL line in Chrome. It opened. Now the search box says "Search in Gardenweb." I put in "retablos" and the first hit was the thread I was looking for....See MoreAny amateur plumbers here?
Comments (9)Dee, does it ever do a partial flush like the end of a flush cycle when no one has used it? It could be slowly letting some water out around the rubber flap. Or a two piece toilet could leak a little between the tank and the bowl - I can't tell if yours is one pieces or two. And that's not good, your floor could be getting damp under it and you might not know it. If that had been going on for quite some time, might create a musty smell. I can change a flapper but my toilet expertise ends there. I'm fortunate to have a wonderful plumber, semi-retired now but he does small jobs here and there. Happily he does them here. My biggest problem with having him come over is getting him to charge me enough to make it worth his time. I tip my plumber generously. Often he'll try to leave only billing me for any parts, maybe accepting a beer and a snack and a sports conversation with DH....See MoreAny flat roof experts here?
Comments (10)Howdy kudz,I'm late to the party but i have solid advice when the day comes for replacing the roof. I wish it was this easy for hvac, plumbing and other things that require repair or replacement. Only hire a contractor who is an otherized installer for one of the commercial roofing manufactures. Most don't want to talk to residential homeowners and I certainly don't blame them. It isn't worth them getting mixed up with fly-by-night residential roofers but a clever guy like you knows how to arange taking someone in their office to lunch or other occasion which give's you opportunity to show you aren't the typical shopper looking for the cheapest bid. That isn't to say commercial roofers overcharge, they just don't want to play price games residential roofers are known for. While I was still working and for a few years after retirement I was able to get mine and close friends' rv roofs replaced by a couple of EPDM contractors I used for commercial work. The replacements actually costed less than had an rv dealer done them. The cherry on top is workmanship is light years better than techs at rv dealers that must preform all types of work on rvs. The downside ,no warranty but for me that's not an issue because 90% of rv roofs require replacement due to storm damage long before they wear out. It's good to see you still plugging along kudz....See MoreKswl
