is this normal? granite help

New to granite. We moved in 6 months ago and I’m noticing dullness to pieces of several stone in our counters when certain light is on it and you look at it the right angle. I just want to make sure it’s not sealant coming off? Our granite has a lot of variation so I’m hoping it’s just the naturalness of it and these parts didn’t take sealant due to the stone type.

Can you take a photo from farther back? It probably is just the natural variations of granite, but that picture is so close-up, it’s hard to see.

Also, many granites do not need sealant at all. Granites vary in how dense they are. Some granites are so dense that nothing can penetrate (iI.e. stain), and those granites do not need to be sealed.

Here is the full island. The brown / black pieces are the pieces that are dull/raw looking over certain light and don’t have that gloss look.

I agree with gpraceman. I would be very insistent that you see the templates taped to the slabs before they are cut so that you can approve exact placement. Sometimes depending upon your edging, you might not be left with as much usable material as you thought. I was surprised after they laid everything out and saw the cuts, how little there was and how tough it would have been to save some of it for another counter.....mostly this was because of certain areas that I liked better than others on the slab. If they don't charge you too much, you can ask that they make you trivets out of the leftovers. I had about 10 circles of different sizes made and I glued them to thick silver candleholders from IKEA and they make lovely cake stands and food serving pieces!

I've shown up for jobs and had customers say "I read your reviews. What's with the lady with the caulk?" I just shrug my shoulders, roll my eyes, and get to work without saying a word. Customers are much more sophisticated than many contractors give them credit for being. They worry to death about a poor review and shouldn't. I wouldn't remove a single poor review I have; they are pure gold as far as credibility. The customers I want have a fully operational kook detector.

Hi Mary! So sorry I just now saw your comment. I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble. It’s so frustrating when you’re SO excited for the crown jewel of the kitchen and it isn’t perfect.... or what you were expecting anyway as nothing in life is perfect. Even if the company is committed to fixing it, it’s still frustrating to not be able to enjoy it right away and go through the process all over again. I hope that they resolve it for you and that everything goes perfect and smooth from here on out for you. I’m sure it will be gorgeous when it’s done. Please post a photo!!! I think for me the biggest reason it bugs me is because the company made False promises. We already went through a horrible granite situation over the summer and ripped out our previous granite countertops to get these and lost $5k doing it and then paid for these to get redone and the company promised everything would be perfect. No wall gaps, all overhangs the same (within 1/16-1/8 inch) because of their technology they use and we also went without countertops while they were being fabricated because I wanted them to laser without any countertops to ensure that everything was measured properly. Then they get installed and things are not what I was told they would be... so although it may not be an issue to someone else- it kind of is a big deal to me because of everything we’ve been through with this kitchen renovation and what we were promised. It’s been one thing after another and nothing has been in our favor!

Looks like natural inclusions in the stone that are harder than the rest of the surface and too hard to polish. It happens, that is mother nature.

That is a granite called Bianco Antico. A very durable and beautiful stone. As has been already mentioned, you are just seeing variations in the granite that are natural. You are lucky to have such a durable stone, as there are many out there that stain or etch - yours will not.

You may not have to ever seal that granite. The way to test if a stone needs sealant is to drop some water on the surface. Wait 10 minutes. If the water absorbs, the stone needs to he sealed. If the water is sitting beaded on top of the stone, it does not need to be sealed.

It might also be a filler that was applied to any indentations/cracks/gaps in the stone when it was polished at the quarry. Here is a filled section in my Taj Mahal quartzite. They usually pick fillers that blend in, but they definitely reflect light differently. All normal with natural stones, specially the more brittle ones.
