2x8 runner or 3 1/2 x 5 1/2

Attached are a couple of pictures of my hallway that I would like to put some sort of area carpet to soften the tile.

Do I do a small 2 x 3 by the doorway and then a 2 x 8 runner or shall I cover more area and do a 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 in front of the door coming across to the hallway and then another one coming down the hallway. Thank you!

I need to see the actual entry space please . Post here in a comment DO NOT start another post. It is always a good idea to post pics of the spaces around the entry since the choice of rug needs to go with the rest of the house.

flat steel bar is cheap and easy to buy. it is easy to drill. it is easy to screw onto the joist as one more reinforcing element. congratulations on sistering the joists already. based on the way you've asked the question i conclude you are in over your head, but you do know that you need help, and you could end up doing something wrong. perhaps with a lot of photos posted it will be possible to get internet helpers to advise perfectly. this will take a few days.

Those original lamps are now split between the kitchen lounge and the living room. I think these old lamps are passé now! I had a similar-sized chest on that side and since I had to pull it out to get the ladder in place, I tried this small table. I'd like to find a matching pair of lamps for my master since I like those others in so many places! What about these since they're the same color as my overhead fixture and rods. Modern drum shade? I'm concerned that they're too tall at 31" with shade. These are metallic in color on the base and 27" high: More bookmarked lamps to come...my web has slowed down

3”x9” Tile Backsplash - 1/2 or 1/3 Offset?

We installed these 4" x 10" tiles ourselves, and changed from a 1/2 offset to 1/3 at the last minute. I was not confident in my ability to get the offset perfect, so I thought the ~3" offset would help disguise layout imperfections. Our range backsplash is similar in appearance to the photo above. I prefer the randomness, as no layout was going to allow perfect symmetry there, while not causing slivers elsewhere. Sometimes you just have to work with the wall space :) Edit: the backsplash/counter joint has since been caulked, and the walls painted BM Stonington Gray

Small bathrooms are too small for herringbone. Large ones should stick with the classic 2:1 Real world 2:1. Not 1.98 to .8 If it’s not 100% divisible, the pattern will walk as you progress.

I think I would do a small 2x3 at the door.

I wouldn't do a runner in the hallway, but there's nothing wrong with doing one. I wouldn't have it be "matchy-matchy with the rug at the door, though.

The rug at the door can be more "practical" (as in easy to clean) than the runner. Of course, I assume that you have a mat outside too.

I would also add one rug that's confined to the entry area and a runner. I agree that they shouldn't be an exact match. It's hard to tell from the photo but your hall looks wide and a 2 by 8 might look skimpy. Check the measurements, you might be able to use a wider runner.
