iSO The best snack mix recipe ever!

This year for Christmas gifts, I would like to include some homemade snack mix. Maybe a sweet and salty one. I have a killer nuts and bolts recipe from the Best of Bridge, but I would like something different. I checked out Pinterest, but nothing caught my eye. I did. look at the one that calls for Ghiardelli (sp?) white chocolate, but I haven’t heard any rave reviews for it. Is there a new, trendy recipe that eludes me?

I am constantly in search of that new must have recipe for whatever, all the time! it’s a curse!

I will have to try this one. I LOVE chocolate- especially in the form of cake! I used to win cake baking contests at the local county fair growing up and no one could understand how a pre-teen was winning the contests over the older bakers, but I will let my secret out- I always used higher quality chocolate than just chocolate chips. When a recipe calls for chocolate chips it is worth it to "upgrade" to a better quality chocolate. I have used the Bakers brand in the past but sometimes it can be too bitter for certain recipes. I'm going to try this recipe using the new Nestle Chocolatier chips (if you haven't tried them yet, they are DELICIOUS!!!) and see how it turns out. Thanks for a great recipe!

Duane, I have only ever used unbleached all-purpose flour. But italian pasta is made from semolina, isn't it? The dough really is just pasta, just made a bit moister than I would make pasta to run through my pasta machine. I actually have made this pasta with a little less water and run it through my pasta machine to make linguini. If you try it, let us know how it works! Oh, and you are right, you can stuff them with whatever you want! Kind of like making kolache, there are traditional fillings (prune, poppy seed, apricot) but noone has ever turn up their nose at mixed berry, pineapple, or even pecan (like a pecan tassie). Chase, I reheat them a couple different ways. I either just put the number I want on a plate and nuke them from frozen (doesn't take long, you don't want to make the pasta tough), or I set them out to thaw for about 45 minutes to an hour then (as mentioned above) I pan fry them in a bit of butter. They taste good both ways! We have always frozen them cooked so the hubbies (none of who are interested in spending time in the kitchen) can go heat them up themselves whenever the urge stricks. For my hubbie the urge stricks often! All the talk about cheese pierogi and fruit pierogi are making me want those, but I really don't want to make any more just now! Joanne

RECIPE: Best Home Made Hot Cocoa Mix

The reason for the added cocoa is the reduced size of the nestles quick container. Originally, the recipe called for the 32oz, 2 pounds. My hubby, the math genius, did some kind of fancy math figuring and came up with about 1/3 cup was missing from the container that was 30oz. There wasn't any way to figure out the preportions of what is in the nestles quick so my daughter said to just toss in 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa and see how it turns out, since trying to reduce everything else might not work. So I just tossed in the unsweetened hersheys cocoa and have been doing it ever since. It does taste a little richer than it used to, actually a little more chocolate taste too. Just wish these manufacturers would stop changing sizes on us. It's hard to use old recipes when they change the size of containers.

Lulu, I can’t vouch for all of these, but the Ranch Pretzel Snack and Parmesan Ranch Snack Mix are very good. There are some others in this link with sweet/salty. The Ranch Fire Crackers might be good, but I’d have to hold back on the heat.

You can see the Ranch thing appeals to me. I keep an 8-oz. container of Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning in the pantry. I never buy the packets, but I think one them equals about 3 tablespoons.

Doesn't it kind of depend on tastes?

I like savory, so I use a classic Chex mix recipe, but I use mostly organic ingredients, and no peanuts. I prefer chunks of Brazil nuts and use Annie's Cheddar Bunnies instead of goldfish or oyster crackers, organic cereal and pretzel sticks. My seasoning has more Worcestershire, along with mustard and Crystal hot sauce.

I was going to suggest the nuts and bolts recipe, but it sounds like you've got the same one my mom has always used. She always gave it at Christmas, and everyone looked forward to it. Thanks for reminding me of it! I think i will make it for my siblings. It'll be a good memory.

I’m looking for something that’s heavy with pecans. I often make my own wasabi peas (yum) but want to add nuts and other things, too. Wasabi spiciness usually surprises people in a nice, addictive way.

My dad always loved it when I made and gave him either orange sugared nuts (usually pecans), or spiced nuts.

I like to make old fashioned cracker jack . I dont make it to give to anyone, just to eat. I found an old recipie in a 1920s magazine and it is wonderful. You can put any mix of nuts that you want, or none. Maybe add in toasted sesame seeds or sunflower seeds.

I had the best snack at a recent summer party: puppy chow. It was addicting. I don’t know what recipe the cook used, I see there are a few out there, I just know it involved Chex and some kind of cocoa/chocolate.

One year for gifts, I bought good peanut butter filled pretzels (when they were a new thing and only at Trader Joe"s, IIRC) and coated them in chocolate.
