Countertop: How high is too high?
Comments (13)We have a double island kitchen with both island counter surfaces at 38" high. We also have a cleanup/scullery area with a farmhouse clean up sink that is part of the kitchen that also has the counter at 38". The separate side run of cabinets with the refrigerator and microwave is the standard 36" high in consideration of children and really short people. This area functions as a breakfast and sandwich area. My old house that I moved into 25 years ago had custom cabinets at 38" high b/c the prior owners were both so tall. Back then it was the only house available in our market and although I was appalled at what I thought was the way too high counters I just decided to live with it. Over the years I learned to love it and even had a cutting board in constant use that added another inch and half to that height. This is why the new house has the higher counters. One thing to consider is body proportions---leg and arm length vs. torso---in deciding proper counter height. Actual top of the head height doesn't tell the real story. Also, especially since I'm older now and my knees and feet not as resilient as in prior years, I wear a chef type clog whenever I'm prepping and cooking for an extended time. That definitely gives me an additional couple of inches of height. Finally, I am 5'5" maybe but everyone else in my family, DH and the children who all turned out tall, really appreciated the higher counters. Comments (44)These are my pics of my countertops placed Friday June 22, 2018. I cried looking at these seams. It looks so cheap. Fabricator explains that's the way it comes. I explained that I shouldn't be able to see the seams so clearly. It looks so unprofessional. They ended up taking them back to their warehouse. In hopes they say if it is quality control will try and fix it just to make it look better. Otherwise I will have to pay an additional fee for them to come out again to install. I just don't know what to do and if still looks the same. This is the first time I've replaced my counters in 24 years. I don't and can't live with it. looking at this for another 24 years. It looks so cheap and it really was not it's a lot of money to me. I hope fingers crossed that they will fix this problem. They never told me that there would be such seams. I thought the edges were done by a machine and it would be all one piece. I have read up on this and now understand there are seams. But now I do know that they should not look like this. If they are good fabricator you shouldn't be able to see them so clearly. I will find out next week what happens....See MoreCountertop installers mis-measured elevator, now want to seam counter
Comments (19)19 fights? what if you got 2-3 teams of 3-4 guys? might take 15-20 mins to get it up, but they could rest each flight, or switch off w/the team and leap frog. (just trying to find other alternatives). If carrying it up flights of stairs is the only reason, I'd find some big moving guys and pay them to do it....See Moreseam directly through middle of walnut counter top/desk
Comments (8)Not sure where in the process someone thought this would come out as good. Is this even fixable, Or do I need to take out the upper cabinets and replace the entire counter top!!? That top is best described as a sin against Walnut. I strongly suspect that someone tried to save some money by grabbing a couple of cheap premade tops and slapping them together. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, there is no reason the counter should be installed in two pieces, even the minimum requirement for an elevator would allow for more than a 120" top. If it had to be cut for some reason it should have been book matched. Yes, it needs to removed and replaced and I wouldn't think it is acceptable unless it was specifically stated in the contract that it would be done this way. You can easily find economical 4' x 12' Walnut veneers even in today's supply chain problem environment....See MoreT T
