Marvin Sliding French Door STUCK LOCKED

The lock on our Marvin sliding french door, installed in 2002 (so out of warranty), is stuck in the "Locked" position.

We've tried turning the interior thumb-turn - no luck - and the exterior key lock - result was a bent key!

It has the three-point locking system, and has been finicky off any on for a while now, but never stuck locked before. (More typically, it was tricky to lock, not unlock).

Any ideas how to troubleshoot and fix this?

I had one that was tricky that it helped to pull the door tighter closed, and it took the pressure off and enabled door to be unlocked. It needed an adjustment.

I had a problem like that once with a similar design door. I finally figured out that the problem was not with the lock. It is possible that the door has warped slightly and is putting pressure on the top or bottom lock/pin, which causes friction and can make it seem like the lock is stuck. If it's a door that opens to the outside, it's also possible that the pin at the bottom has gotten corroded a little from moisture. Stand on the side the door opens to; then use your shoulder to put some weight against the door toward the top, or your foot to provide pressure against the bottom, and see if you can get the handle to turn.

I doubt that a loose thumb turn is evidence of tampering, I'd be more inclined to think it's just come loose. These kinds of things are often just press fitted together unless you see something like a screw head. Contact Marvin or your dealer about replacement options.

a few years ago I had Wonderful Windows come out and give me a quote. They said they would have to custom make my door. My slider is 9 ft X 8 ft. My house was built in 1978. The slider in our living area is in bad shape. There is another slider in the master bathroom (of all places) right next to the toilet. That one is smaller.

I just put in four sp sliders in my house- four eight foot, one six foot. Easy to install, they work great. Mine are aluminum clad.

Thanks Seabornman. We've had that happen with this door off and on before, but it never occurred to us to have it adjusted. That trick (pulling it really tightly closed while unlocking) definitely isn't working now.

Use a wonder bar at various location to move door slightly while helper keeps tension on key or thumb-turn. Another way to move door is with suction cups designed to lift large glass panes. Resist the temptation to use pliers with key or thumb-turn. Once door is unlocked you can adjust door in track or use course file to slightly enlarge hole that latch gos into when locked.
