Comments (5)After researching trident maple, it is a possibility. The bark pic the OP posted in another topic looks very similar to trident maple. Leaf morphology is tricky for me when only relying on image search for ID but trident is also a loose match with what I have seen. Image search images for trident do show glossy leaf surface though and this sample does not have that. Could the stress the tree is under be the issue with loss of gloss? I don't know. From your link mulchmama: "Even the straight species itself is rare, though several variegated and dwarf cultivars are readily available from bonsai nurseries." If these are wild trees in the woods, acer rubrum would overwhelmingly be more likely due to the sheer number of acer rubrum clones common in the nursery trade and their ability to proliferate into their surroundings. If planted trees, I suppose they could be trident maple. I was also under the impression red flowers gave acer rubrum it's name, not the petiole or anything to do with the leaf. Comments (5)We would never have guessed that in a million years. ==>> thats funny.. these trees have been around millions of years.. lol ... they used to be considered conifers.. though i am not sure that still holds.. in my z5 MI .. they are extremely slow growing ... gorgeous fall yellow ... there is a really cool variegated one [see link] ... etc ... depending on where you are.. you may never get one to get very big.. very fast.. but its a cool addition to the collection ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreCan someone identify this leaf disease/fungus?
