Trim & Ceiling Paint Color vis-a-vis Cabinet Paint Color
Comments (10)Hi jmcgowan, Can't wait to see your F&B Pointing painted cabinets. Pointing was one of our top choices -- such a beautiful color! Our kitchen isn't that big by kitchen standards these days (it is 274 square feet). So the calm continuity of the same color on cabinets and trim works well in our ''smaller'' space. In general, however, I do like the play of different shades of white layered together in a room. So I certainly don't think there is anything wrong with picking a different white for the trim. In some cases it might add the depth or slight contrast that the room needs. My sense from your drawing is that your kitchen is quite a bit larger; perhaps that is why your architect thinks that in your space having different trim and cabinet colors will work well. I'd encourage him to tell you a bit more about his thinking on this. Again, he may well be right. In any case, once your cabinets are installed, if you decide you want to match (or not match) you can make that decision at that time. As for the counters, we had some rough ideas about what our counter top colors/material might be before we ordered the paint color for our cabinets; but we didn't know for sure. That was a bit of a gamble....See MoreI still like brass--there I said it!
Comments (19)I'm quite certain that some family members were mortified when I hung a brass chandelier in the dining room. And to add insult to injury, I've added a whole slew of brass accessories to that room. There's another room in the house that's turning all brassy, as well. I've started noticing more and more brass colored finishes in lighting, frames, accessories, hardware, etc., but they've renamed it "aged gold" "antique gold" or some other similar thing...anything except calling it that "B" word. I think many people's only exposure to brass was the faux antique brass of the '70's, followed by the tinny extra-shiny plated brass of the '80's. I know mine was, and when I had enough adventures that I had seen actual solid brass in all it's various stages of patina, well, there's just nothing else like it. I passed up an old brass candlestick lamp at the thrift the other day (I already have too many lamps) but now I wish I had bought it....See MoreBlue/gray stained cabinets instead of paint? Am I crazy?
Comments (17)lceh, I'm sorry I came late to this thread -- have you looked at the General Finishes dye stains? In terms of quality they're superior to the MinWax products and you might get a longer lasting finish from them? Then there's also milk paint, which is a fabulous cabinet finish topped with a good sealer. It's gorgeous. For anyone who is trying to "stain" their old cabinets and can't get all the previous coating off, this is a potential option. They make an additive that allows the milk paint to seal to previously-finished surfaces. Done this way, it's more opaque but has lots of natural tonal shadings that are the next best thing to a translucent stain. This is an old unfinished oak dresser I did, it's milkpainted white with gray stencils, but gives you the idea. (Driftwood plus Snow White and a little Slate gives you a perfect Gustavian Grey...) Whichever product you choose, they'll all look good -- have fun mixing! Here is a link that might be useful: Milk Paint...See MoreMy house was painted with acrylic paint instead of stain
Comments (5)Well, you cant remove all the paint, but, you could repaint again with a flat paint or you can go over the paint with a solid color stain. I would not be very happy, if I had said, stain, and my painter used paint. Once its painted, the only way you would ever be able to use stain again is to strip the entire house, and that sure sounds like a whole lot of work. No priming and not fixing things that needed repairing wouldnt make me very happy either. Satin paint is much easier to keep clean than flat paint, but, satin paint also shows all the imperfections as you found out....See MoreDoug Kraus
