kitchen facelift HELP

Hi friends, we are moving into a home with a very sad kitchen. I’m not sure I have cash to rip it all out though. Any hot tips on making it less 2000 and breathing life back into it? I was going to do light floors. Now, what color would you take them? I would love to replace counters and backsplash to stay in budget. Any hot tips or ideas? I’ll include my mood board

Comments (7)Congratulations on your new home--how exciting! : ) We are a family blessed with seven children, and we made the mistake of painting our cabs white a few years ago. Now, some paints are better than others, but... I would not recommend going with white. With an active family, it is extremely difficult to keep looking nice. So our farmhouse white kitchen shows a ton of farmhouse dirt to go with it. ; ) It does not wipe down like a nice hard, sprayed finish, and it shows every drip, every swipe, everything. It also wears off along the edges. If you like the worn farmhouse look, or you are ready to wipe down the kitchen after every muddy child comes in for a drink, or like touching up your cabs with a paintbrush regularly, go for it! Someone on here compared paint and wood this way: On painted surfaces, you see just the surface, so if there is any flaw, you notice it. With wood, you see through the surface to the wood. So if there are flaws on the surface, you see past these to the grain. Or something like that. DH is in a lot of people's homes doing repairs and remodeling. He says the ones that have wood doors look cleaner than the ones with white doors. The white doors show it all. Honestly, I think the cupboards look pretty nice. What in particular is bothering you the most? The color of the wood, the style, the backsplash...? My guess is that you can make it read farmhouse with some decorative accents without having to go to the effort (or maintenance nightmare) of painting or staining the cabinets. Pages turned- I was thinking the same thing with replacing the shelves with glass in the hutch. :) maybe add some pieces with color in there I am going to look at a round table today but if it doesn't work I have found a nice bench at Ballard I can use with the table for extra seating. Once I finalize the table I plan to add a rug. I mocked up the lights above the island & hated it! I still feel like it needs more light though. Any suggestions? I was thinking above cabinet lighting. I got a sample of BM Rustic Taupe to try. There is so little wall space to paint but I think a bit darker taupe color may help the cabinets pop. Feedback please.....other wall color suggestions? Great suggestion to darken the grout! I actually read online about using stain on travertine to darken it. I will have to try that out on some samples before I could commit to possibly making that situation worse. I'll try to post pics of the rustic taupe sample on the wall...and any others suggested. At some point this year we plan to paint the family room & entry hall maybe BM Texas leather or Cabot Trail. They are both two stories tall so we are hoping to choose a warmer color than what's there. At any rate, I was thinking rustic taupe would compliment either of those choices for the adjoining rooms yet add a pop of interest. The kitchen's main challenge as I see it is a layout(say I'd be bothered by a very close position of the fridge next to the entrance, cooktop in the peninsula with eating space next to it) and lack of storage. It looks nice, at least on the pictures. I wouldn't do anything cosmetic, (including putting heavier countertops on older cabinets, or painting cabinets that from aestheticall point of view look fine and appropriate to the house..unless they're very worn and I can't see that, etc) until I'm in the house, maybe minimum half a year, studying how I want it to function, considering how layout can be changed(if you decide to go for it) and how it will impact the space as a whole. Changing the layout in 60's house..I don't know where the house is but here wouldn't be 20 K. Even with a small kitchen. Would be almost twice the cost. You touch walls, plumbing, electrical, you might need to abate asbestos, etc..drives the prices up, even if you keep the materials etc very reasonable. And it takes lot of careful planning, thought put into it, weighting pros and cons, your own preferences (say I'd be tempted to enclose the kitchen some, or move it a bit, to create the better sense of entrance, and increase storage..maybe I'd shorten it on the entrance door side, but encroach more toward the hallway so to say...I'd consider whether a pantry can be put in, or free-standing hutch would work better on the opposite side..I would give up seating there..and hundred other things) You will know all that better when living in the house. What bothers you the most, what bothers you the least..what are you ready to sacrifice and what you plan to gain. I'm waiting with interest to read other responses-there are some very talented people here, with better eye for layouts and spatial thinking than me..they might have great suggestions for you to consider. If you can upload even a simple plan with dimensions, that would be helpful too. If you want to paint meanwhile-your preferences will work nice with the kitchen as is. Comments (21)Look at Conestoga Cabinets, available from a couple of on-line sellers. Perhaps they would fit into your budget. That manufacturer has had good reviews, and they are US made. Also, for counters, don't rule out solid surface or even laminate (which I am told - I've no experience - is much improved over the past.) With white shaker cabinets, neutral floor, and that pretty blue tile, you can go with a gray, white, hints of blue - lots of selection. Just have to make sure that the floor, cabinets, and counter are compatible in undertones - like, floor tile often leans pinkish, so the counter needs to be compatible with that. I wouldn't waste space on a separate trash cabinet. Make your new sink one with the drain offset to one side or to the rear, and put a trash pullout under the sink. Unless you are finding the small bit of counter to the right of the fridge useful, I would move the fridge over, enclose it, and put a 24" deep cabinet over it, which will improve access to and allow more storage over the fridge. What else I would change, if you got new cabinets & have a few more dollars, is to move the sink over to the left - at least in front of the closest window, and move the dishwasher over to make room. Since you just bought the house, living in it some will allow you to know what works for you, and what doesn't. This way you'll know how you want the kitchen to work and do a full gut if need be.
