Furniture Home Decorating living room

Help! Family Room Layout

We are looking to completely redo this room. The paint will stay the same but everything else is going. The walls are beige but pulls in a little green at night. Where would you put a couch/sectional? What color furniture? The fireplace is on the five year list…

Have you tried the TV between the windows? Sofa facing TV and 2 chairs facing the FP.

This is what I would suggest. If you put the tv on an articulating arm, you can face it toward the seating area. You may want to have additional seating area on the half wall.

it's a bit hard to answer in the abstract (i.e., are there other sitting rooms someplace?). my starting point would be adding more seating -- some day you may want to watch TV with more than two people at a time, or even have a conversation there! put a couch on the wall that has the play mats currently (without measurements, I'm just assuming there's still clearance to walk through -- otherwise, a pair of chairs with a table between them), and get a larger rug to unify the whole seating area/conversational grouping. if the current couch is too far from the TV for comfortable watching, you could move it up close the fireplace, leaving a walkway behind to the sliders. but again, I'm just guessing at scale here. otherwise, TV might be better lowered. I'd also switch the blue art behind the couch for the brown piece over the fireplace which will put both in better proportion to their settings.

I would put dinning table near the kitchen if it’s an option. Is the kitchen close to fireplace?

The kitchen opens into this room. It faces the fireplace. Our kitchen has an eat in area and we have a dining room off the other side of our kitchen, so the table in our family room doesn’t need to stay. It is just extra

I really like the TV between the windows. You can enjoy the TV and the fire.

The niche next to the fireplace is perfect for shelves that would be flush with the walls.

The table would make a great game table under the window to the right of the clock.

The rug you propose is okay but in this room it seems dark, something lighter would brighten up the space.

For the same reason I would not get dark uphostery or furniture. A sofa and loveseat is more flexible than a sectional.

I like the existing blue rug but it's a little small. I would go with that color scheme, that shade of blue and white is great in here. The seating should fit on the rug.
