What do you wish you had done differently? [Part 2]
Comments (25)hmmm, let's see - so far I would change: - the hybrid radiant/induction cooktop to full induction. There really is a difference. I'm afraid I'm going to weare out the induction part since I try so hard to use them over the radiant ones. - the kitchen layout. It wasn't until AFTER the granite was in, did I realize that it would not have been that difficult. - kept the sink order with Galaxy to get the sink I wanted. I was done to the midnight hour and would have had to pay an extra $90 for overnight shipping. I used the sink that my fabricator found - builder grade. It's OK, but it scratches a lot. It replaced a then top-of-the-line Elkay that didn't scratch nearly uas much. I like what I have, but think the extra $$ would have been worth it. - planned!! I didn't plan on doing this - just replace one appliance. That turned into having to add this, that or the other as I moved along the way. - different faucet. I have Kohler (don't remember model), and don't like it at all. It's too expensive to just switch out, but if I can find a taker, I'll make the change. All-in-all, I'm very happy/satisfied. I ended up with some very good new toys, but I just know if I had planned, I would have done some things very differently....See MoreDo you collect white ironstone? May I see pics?
Comments (24)moutaineergirl - As you said, your meakin creamer is pre-1897. The other two pieces may be even older if they are English and unmarked, or it's possible that they're American. American ironstone wasn't readily embraced by Americans right away and English was preferred. American potters either left their pieces unmarked, or used marks that looked very much like English marks - basically in an effort to fool people. Eventually, American ironstone came into its own and the marks became more unique. My favorite American mark is a Homer Laughlin (Ohio) image of the American Eagle attacking the British lion. ;o) Your matching pair appear to be in really good condition, but when I clicked on the images to try to see them larger, it wouldn't let me into photobucket. I couldn't make out what pattern they might be. arlosmom - I love the way you've used your pieces, and I love brown transferware too! coll4 - I'm drooling over that giant bowl and the huge pitcher on the right of your lighted cabinet. Wow!...See MoreDo you see what I see?
Comments (46)LOL, magnaverde! I hope this isn't too far OT, but I have another, more mundane, color/taste observation. Every year I make gallons of that middle-class holiday staple, cranberry Jello salad. My recipe, from a church cookbook, states "any flavor red gelatin." I prefer to use the red raspberry flavor, but I think almost all artificial 'fruity' flavors taste alike. Following are some ingredient lists for (basically) the same salad, found on the internet, on different sites: 1 (6 oz.) pkg. raspberry gelatin 1 c. boiling water 1 (20 oz.) can crushed pineapple, drained, save juice 1 1/2 tbsp. lemon juice 1 (14 oz.) jar cranberry-orange relish 1 c. diced apples 1/2 c. broken pecans 1/4 c. celery, chopped 1 lb fresh cranberries crushed or minced 2 packages black cherry Jello 1 medium orange peeled and seeded (all white must be removed) 1 cup pecans or walnuts crushed 1 cup sugar 2 sm. strawberry Jello 1 Ocean Spray cran fruit (12 oz.) 1/2 (20 oz.) can crushed pineapple 12-16 red grapes 1/4 c. chopped nuts 2 c. boiling water 1/2 c. cold water 1 lg. pkg. orange Jello 2 c. hot water 10 c. cold water 1 jar orange cranberry relish 1/2 c. chopped celery 1/2 c. chopped walnuts I was surprised to find this one, too: 1 (3 oz.) pkg. lemon Jello 1 2/3 c. water 1/2 c. celery, chopped or diced 1/2 c. nut meats 1 c. ground cranberries 1/2 c. ground orange 2/3 c. sugar Or 1 c. cranberry orange relish may be used I'd be willing to wager that very few people, least of all myself, could tell what 'flavor' of gelatin was used in the final product....See MoreDo you think you see colors differently?
Comments (42)a long time ago i heard my brother listening to a song with the lyrics "the lemon of pink" and it made so much sense to me. most people i know would not have a clue how telling that statement is. yes, environment, in my opinion, plays a major role on how we see and understand color. look at the painters from Venice--their understanding of color was very different from painters elsewhere. environment can play a role in ways like it did with the impressionists, who were obviously very interested in things like color theory, painting outdoors, they had the benefit of collapsible paint tubes to do so, but also they often noticed reflected imagery (shop windows, wet cobblestone, etc) and their artwork reflects that (no pun intended). the worst is when someone calls blue "purple" or vice versa. these people obviously don't understand colors like indigo....See MoreMegan Dague
