Mid Century Modern Kitchen - need help with cabinet hardware! please

Greetings house community! Getting ready for demo day for a kitchen remodel, and I have everything selected except for the cabinet hardware.

The style of house is mid century modern and we are trying to keep that with the kitchen remodel. Cabinets are a flat slab, walnut veneer, vertical grain, with a natural clear finish. We’d like a satin brass cabinet hardware and originally I had selected and Emtek pull (select, knurled, satin brass) however, my husband doesn’t think this is mid century enough.

That pull is not MCM. If it appeals to you, that is fine, but you need to decide if you really want MCM hardware in that case.

Here is a pic of Rejuvenation's Boomerang Drawer Pull and Peg knob. True MCM design. They are offered in aged brass, polished chrome and ORB. I think polished chrome is most true to MCM.

In any case, you should consider combining knobs and pulls on your cabinetry. You could do pulls for drawers and knobs for doors, or do uppers in knobs and lowers in pulls.

Edited to add: on another note, your hood needs to be 6" wider than your cooktop. Also make sure it is deep enough front-to-back. Typically plaster hoods are not deep enough, which means that your cooking smoke/grease from the front burners lands on the front of the hood rather than up the exhaust.

The boomerang hardware above is one good example of mcm hardware. If you go to google, and type in mcm hardware for cabinets, you will get several more ideas

I love the metal work (had to show it to my spouse and he thinks it is absolutely great too). We have always been MCM fans and there was a time in life I had to explain the concept to people and they looked at me like I was crazy for liking such an outdated style, but thanks to Mad Men it came back full force. I struggle with its rise in popularity again as I felt a bit happy keeping the secret to myself! But thank goodness people have stopped tearing out the wonderful touches from that era. I wonder what the original kitchen of this home looked like? This is just the type of home I wanted but could not find -- five years ago we moved back to Michigan and had to find a home very, very quickly so all the good homes like this were snatched up or simply too expensive. Back to the metal work, I do think that the oak trim around it is mucking it up a bit and taking away from the clean lines of the foyer. I think it remaining in the foyer is the best place for it. I really think the flagstone is also pretty but agree with others that too many flooring types might be bad. Have you considered running a slate-like tile or a gray throughout the kitchen and foyer for consistency rather than adding hardwoods? We just had our foyer entry and back entrance tiled in a slate-like tile from Daltile in a dark charcoal color in a hopscotch pattern. It is a nod to MCM.

This is my living room....11ft wide by 19ft long (from the stairwell.) We are struggling to find a furniture plan that will work with this long and open living room. The picture is taken from the front door entry. On the left wall (which you cannot see) is a large living room window 4'x8'. We are hoping to have a built-in constructed wall to wall on the far end of the living room. Cabinets on the bottom, shelving on the top, and an opening for our media. We need the storage for our young family of five. Around the stairwell to the right is an open doorway to the kitchen. On the far back right is the dining room--which is open to the kitchen. Right now we have a very small sofa (~50") floating at the closer end of the room. Two chairs are to the left under the window. It works but it feels like a waiting room! I'd like to have a console table on the narrow wall to the right (between the opening to the dining room and walkway to the kitchen.) I'd like to have this room sit 4-5 people as we're planning on finishing the basement to represent more of a lounge space for the family.

I would go with terrazzo since going with wood would be a poor design choice. I am not a fan of wall to wall carpet for a variety of reasons so that wouldn't be an option for me. Terrazzo is both true to the period and would look great with that style of the home. It is also more of an investment to future buyers as anyone who is looking for a classic MCM home is going to be thrilled to find terrazzo. However, wall to wall would no doubt be cozier but would need replacing fairly frequently

Real farmhouses in the 50s and 60s had mid-century modern elements. Houses in the country in the 50s and 60s had mid-century modern elements. But..neither the farmhouse and country elements of those homes nor the mid-century modern elements of those home were, as Live_Wire pithily put it, the Disney theme versions of those design trends. If you don't go over-the-top with "farmhouse" or "country", I think it can all work together well. But when you are working without a net (an inspiration pic, in this case, of the elements you want to combine), a mood board, or even better, a real mock-up, is your friend. Putting all the elements together on paper, or on computer screen will let you see how everything works together and give you a chance to course correct.

I agree the bar pull shape is European, the knurled finish and matte gold is purely 2010s + .

If you like them it's fine, but they are not MCM.

In addition to the Rejuvenation ones shown above, some less 50s Googie style, but more 50s -60s architect-y style include things like this:

Don't pay attention to the finishes, necessarily

Edge pull

Concave pull

Goblet pull

Ball / orb pull.

White ceramic pulls in the shape of the last one were very popular in my area in the 1960s in the modern infill houses. Maybe because there are lots of colonial area houses.

here's a couple views shown......maybe whatever is avail in knobs along w pulls for the sake of coordination..........and finding your specefic sizes......I dont think you have to be totally purist about MCM hardware. I recall a lot of wood handles on teak goods and spherical knobs but you probably wouldnt pick those now.

a piece w simple geometric lines seems it would fulfill. simplicity in other words. I like how they selected a great finish to work w the wood shown here even tho the knob is really simple......knobs even on the drawers. It seems to really feel MCM.

I just used these in our slightly mid-century laundry room. We used the Rejuvenation boomerangs as well. These are pricey, but I love them
