I am stumped on what to do for backsplash & wall

Our house is a big open floor plan, kitchen,dining and family/living room all together. My style is eccletic, if I like it, I buy it, it doesn't have to match. Counter is black, as well as the window frames. We have alot of different type of wood furniture, along with wood floor. As you can see, not alot to work with, but looking for something different, not of the norm...any suggestions greatly appreciated! dining and family/living room all together. I think the first thing you'd want to decide on is how high you want your backsplash - you can either go with a fairly low backsplash (say, not higher than the bottom of the window trim), or go full wall height, which I think will look spectacular and have a really big "wow" factor.

Assuming that's what you want - I've noticed you don't have much space between the windows, so I would probably go with a nice mosaic tile (otherwise, you may end up with stacks of half-tiles in-between you windows, which may not look great). I personally really like Daltile's Rhetoric 2" x 2" Porcelain Octagon and Dot Tile (couldn't find it on Houzz, but you can find it on Wayfair) - I'm going to use it myself for shower pan flooring, but I saw it being used as backsplash as well, and it looks really good. It comes in a few grays/white (which I think would nicely complement your cabinets + countertop) and in a beige (which I think could work for you too as it will complement the wooden elements in your house). If you don't like this particular tile - try browsing online for mosaic tiles until you find something that you like :)

I'd look at handmade or handglazed look tile -- it will shine and look great with the natural textures throughout.

Also, could you play with adding additional simple crown to your cabinets, by sticking some temporary boards in place to look at? I understand you have a complex ceiling situation... I personally hate the dark shadows created when cabinets are alllllmost at the ceiling, so in you shoes I would like to at least see the taller option and decide.

Chiommy, I hope you have answers to your questions by now. I remodeled a mobile home kitchen a few years back and used laminate flooring that looks like tile as my backsplash. Choose some of the wide format and be sure any seams are either sealed with waterproof caulk or away from constantly wetted areas. The surface of the tile is very durable but the edges will swell and disentegrate if they are often wetted.

Drywall is cheap and easy to patch. I'd just take a metal scraper and start prying that bugger off. If you can't figure out how to patch the drywall, surely one of your contractors can! It really is easy. And cheap. Especially since you will be tiling over most of it, so you don't need a perfect finish coat. (Getting a perfect finish coat is the trickiest aspect, IME.) I had a plastic thing like that as a backsplash behind by utility sink, but mine was screwed to the wall so it was easy to remove without harming the drywall, and I can't see any screw holes in yours, so it was probably glued on. Even so, it might pry off easily enough and then you can just patch the drywall a bit, prime it, and you're good to go. Worst case, you trash the drywall, and you'll just need to cut the drywall to nearby studs, slap up a patch piece, tape and mud a few coats, and it'd done. In my reno, my contractors have had to do that to good drywall at least a dozen times, and one competent guy can get it cut out, patched, taped and mudded to finish coat in just a few hours work.

Thank you. The walls are a dark grey (I don’t have the chip), and I’m not set on subway, but am a bit concerned about being too busy - really like the herringbone, but still confused on tone/colour. The chairs are from a Urban barn. Thanks so much for any suggestions!

What about just having the Calcutta as the backsplash? Just run it to the bottom of the hood. No other stone or anything else needed.

I would probably just do 2 inch countertop splash or up to window with it. i love a fun tile but you don’t have a lot of wall.
