Carpet/NoCarpet in the bedrooms?
Comments (52)Okay - late to the party. I want hardwood floor in every room in my house except the bathrooms, where I prefer tile. I do have antique wool oriental rugs in all rooms. But if I could afford it, I would have some wonderful Stark wool carpet in my bedroom. Since the room is 24'x24', that is out of the question. Yes, I DO have allergies and asthma. My daughter has hardwood floor through out all the rooms in her house, but in the MBR, she has carpet over hardwood. She prefers a carpeted bedroom, not area rugs. Yes, she has cats and a son with allergies. Many decades ago, I had an allergist in St Louis who aid that unless a child is ending up in the hospital, there was no reason to get rid of carpet, draperies, upholstered furniture, stuffed animals, and family pets - the recommendation of most allergists for households where a child has allergies. He said that allergies are so complex, that just getting rid of a couple of things will not change things much. He said the only way to totally avoid allergens would be to live like "The Boy in the Bubble", and that wasn't recommended for serious emotional reasons. When we moved to LA, I started calling allergists, explaining that I had 5 cats and 2 dogs and no intention of getting rid of any of them. Finally found a terrific one who totally agreed with the St Louis allergist. When we moved to KY, I did the same - found one who agreed with them. He retired and I now have yet another allergist. He, too, agrees. Another thing I liked about all these allergists was that they were not selling ANYTHING other than their medical services! Most allergist's offices want to see you special filters, air purifiers, special bedding - you name it - they have a very expensive product just for you. This is especially true in pediatric allergist's office. Don't like that at ALL! Allergies are very complex. When I go somewhere without my dog (now only 1 dog), my asthma is no different than when I'm home sleeping with the dog. Allergies are very complex. If one is already having hardwood put down, put it down EVERYWHERE. If you prefer carpet in a bedroom, put it down over the hardwood. Do it for resale if nothing else....See MoreCarpet, hardwood, or other flooring on upper levels?
Comments (5)That hardwood looks to be red oak with either oil based finish that has oranged (ambered) over time or a light stain. The SPECIES of the hardwood is pretty easy to match. If you are going to add more hardwood, then the SPECIES match is the most important thing. You can always work with a different COLOUR on the upper floors. That is completely acceptable. And as Sina points out, you can always do the hallways/master bedroom in the hardwood and then run carpet (durable as you can find) in the other areas. Again this is perfectly acceptable. Many, many people prefer carpet in bedrooms and offices. Because the hardwood looks to be red oak in a 2" - 3" wide plank, this should be super easy and (relatively) cost effective to find/install. You can save money by adding carpets to the other areas. Red Oak can then be added to other rooms at a later date if you feel you want a house that is wall to wall hardwood. It is one of the easier species to find/install/match. They key to this is the species match....See MoreReplace carpet with hard surface?
Comments (7)Slate looks amazing with cedar. I would recommend moving away from wood tones (even cork is going to be too much). Natural stone or high-end porcelain tile that looks like natural stone is a great way to get wood walls/ceilings to show off their colours. Anything that is deep blue or deep green (like slate) will look outstanding in this space. Of course the drawback is it will be cold. That's the trade off you have to live with when working with wood on walls and ceilings....you have a hard time putting it on the floors. It will feel like a Finnish Sauna if you have wood on the floor as well. The other option would be to paint the ceiling. That will rid you of ONE of the surfaces of wood. But you have to HATE the exposed cedar ceiling to want to throw a coat of paint on it. It is a stunning look when done right. Again, you have to WANT to cover up the cedar on the ceiling to be happy with that look....See MoreCarpet versus wood floor in the master bedroom
Comments (52)I've copied & pasted a comment I made 20 minutes ago! haha Well... I could probably write 3 pages worth of nonsense, which would seem "tainted" because I'm in the business of manufacturing hardwood flooring. But the short version is... over the years, we've provided hardwood flooring for a number of clients, and have NEVER had anyone comment that it was the wrong decision. The consensus USED to be that carpet was preferable, because it was "warm & soft", however the test of time has proven that wood flooring is: A} "environmentally friendly" (being a product of nature...) B} Provides excellent insulation C} Much easier to maintain than carpet D} With the little bit of care needed, it will outlast carpet for DECADES, and with a bit of attention to product appearance/choice, it will remain "in style" almost indefinitely. E} MOST importantly... hardwood flooring is a stable product, which will not "SHED" all of the nasty acrylic/nylon/petroleum based fibers into the air, which is what we BREATH... (that which isn't sucked up by the vacuum cleaner). Most people attribute "dusty furniture" to DIRT... when it's a known fact that DUST is mainly particulates which have been collected by, or shed by CARPET. Okay... I'm done! haha...See Moreleftontheinside
