This was posted on my organic gardening forum discussing holiday meal planning for family/friends. We have decided not to travel. Host a small gathering with close friends. We lost a mutual friend to Covid so we will all be careful the week before and test.

Order your four free test kits whether you feel ill or not. Having just got over my first bout with Covid and not having the tests meant going to the local pharmacy and paying $25 for them.

My dh and I were tested at the end of June. It took 2 full weeks to get the results. More recently, my dh has been tested every week for the past month. Those results have taken 3 days to receive. Same location, drive by testing in our local Walmart parking lot. They test 1 morning every week. Easy to register, only identifying data is name, dob and email address. No insurance information needed. I assume they are reimbursed by the feds. My MIL is 95 residing in assisted living. She is very mobile and social. Like others, the months have passed with no visitors at all. My dh has been pressing management for visitation rights. Finally they offered an 'essential caregiver' option. He filled out some paperwork and as long as he provides a negative test within 3 days, he can visit in her apartment for up to 3 hours a week. His sister does the same. It's been a blessing for his mom.

Thanks for stopping by yeonassky and the 'high five'. This is the time of year i need to re-visit and study up on all the various grain, seed, and bean flours. Just found my rye flour and it has gone rancid. Need to order. I make a Norwegian brown bread i call 'barnyard rye'. Not a poop scent but more like newly mown damp hay. Dad loves it. My sister avoids dairy and gluten as well as rice and lentils. But is fine with sprouted grain flour. Both our extended families have sensitivities but no allergies. Just started holiday meal planning. We do all the cooking. Gets difficult to please all but we like the challenge. A shame about your sous vide stick John Liu. Might be toast. Maybe do a small saucepan test using hot tap water to start. My little notebook i keep in my cambro says that i cut my leg of lamb in two. 128F for 3 hours. Take one out and ice bath it. Raise temp to 132F for another hour. Into ice bath. I also did this the day before and fridged them. (not sure why) I have no memory of the meal so must have been 5 or more years ago. Must have given them some dry brine time and grill seared to finish the re-heat? Might have had houseguests. Nice looking pasta and salad and portion, (wink) Last night i cast iron seared a flat iron steak. From the local farm meat share. They choose the cuts. Always interesting. Really nice flavor and tender. I gave it a good 6-7 hour dry brine uncovered in the fridge. I over ordered potatoes to test some holiday appetizer ideas. So made some long overdo lumpy mashed. Just a bit of yogurt. Steak was good with a shaved fennel salad. Arugula, blanched kale and fennel stems. Pickled red onions. prep Leftovers for a shared lunch plate A third of the steak in the fridge. Leaning towards steak tacos tonight.

@gsciencechick - the program I joined this month refers to "informed" intuitive eating - knowing why you are craving sweets, or not being able to go more than 2 hours between meals without getting hangry so you can fix it. I don't know the exact definition of intuitive eating, but in the end I understood their idea to mean - listen closely to your body, but try to get it to eventually tell you the right thing :) I love the NSVs - looking and feeling good. I travel far to get my hair cut, so usually I only make it a couple times a year - very strange, but that's how it's been working out. Last week I got the BEST haircut, so that's a win for sure. It is great to feel good in your body and your clothes. My travels went ok. Not quite as much exercise as usual, but lots of steps. I wore my jeans for the second time this season and they are not any looser. Thought maybe I was losing some in my waist, I feel less bloated with all of this additional fiber, but no go there. I came back several pounds up as usual, but am down a couple this morning. Trying to get back on track. My schedule is pretty free through the end of the year, so I hope to make some weight lifting progress. Still considering joining a gym as the weather gets cooler. This is the same podcast host we linked last week - but he had another great guest. This one talking about the benefits of walking - not just on physical health, but mental health, problem solving, focus, job performance etc. I found it interesting and motivating. Sometimes it's easy to get caught in the weeds of weight loss, but often it comes down to the basics. The guest was Irish as well - so fun listening! Walking Podcast I live in a very walkable area - to walk my dog or get a stroll in, but I can't walk to the store or to run errands, or to dinner. I would love to live somewhere like that. I think it's such a great lifestyle.

No interesting cooking for people over here, but I’ve been cooking tasty food for dogs :-) We’re in Berkeley taking care of our friends’ very elderly and reportedly on his last legs little dog. I am, of course, determined that he will not expire on my watch, and when he eats enthusiastically I feel better. So, what to feed him? The base is a tasty homemade chicken stock, made from a roasted chicken, carrots, celery, onion - just like you’d make a chicken stock for yourself. We cook a batch of rice with that stock. Other chicken is browned then simmered, and minced up. His kibble is soaked in more stock. Then some more cooked chicken and carrots get pureed with stock into a sort of gravy-paste. Rice, kibble, and gravy are mixed, then briefly warmed in the microwave. Finally, crisp bacon is crumbled on top. I am pleased to say that Elderly Dog positively gobbles his food, cleaning his bowl reliably enough that I can give him his pills crushed in the food. I’d happily eat it myself, actually, except that there’s no salt or spice. Well, I don’t really like kibble. All the fixings are in stored in Tupperware so feeding doesn’t take long.

They became available no fee again on 9-25. I ordered ours, and ordered for my sister then warned her I'd sent for her tests without asking 😘

I have some, but I need to check box numbers and see which fall where in the extended 'use-by' date printed on them. It's going to be an exercise of several minutes and I haven't gotten to it yet. There may be some in the linen closet to toss.

I used the first test in a while last week. DH very much wanted to go to the memorial lunch of a childhood friend and I wasn't really at my best the day before. He asked me to test just in case and I did - negative.

I almost wished we could have skipped that lunch. The weather was wet so doors were closed, it was heavily attended and felt much too crowded. I think it must have been the most densely populated room we've been in since Covid began, and I hope not to have to do that again any time soon. We're on day 5 of our countdown and no symptoms aches or pains today so maybe we were lucky.

SWMBO had coffee with a friend who came down with Covid the next day, leading SWMBO to cancel her birthday events while waiting to see if she’d been infected ( fortunately not). DD had a dinner planned then one of the guests had a similar exposure, so that dinner got postponed. My friend got pretty sick with Covid which delayed his fall whiskey tasting event by three weeks. More and more Covid possible exposures are disrupting our plans, so far harmlessly, but still disrupting. We have a stack of tests here, may order some more. So far, SWMBO and I have avoided getting Covid, and would prefer to keep it that way. The updated vaccine is not widely available here yet, and it’s been almost a year since my last booster, so we’re being rather more careful than was the case over the summer.

Yes, it's true. During the transition to open schools, etc., they had to have something. All the temperature gun tells you is whether people are lying about not feeling well. Although the home tests are wildly inaccurate, by scientific standards, using them did cut way down on the rate of infection in, for instance, team sports. There were still whole teams which came down with covid, but many more where a player tested positive, stayed home, and the team didn't get it, Same with workplaces, etc. That is, flawed as it may be, it seems to be better than nothing.
