I want to paint my kitchen cabinets the whitish side and update brighten back splash . Any suggestions .

If you are installing a new back splash, I would change the orientation of the electric outlets to horizontal and move them closer to the countertop.

I don't understand your comment about "painting my cabinets the whitish side".

You have different handles on the white cabinets then the brown. You also have a glass knob on the brown as well as the pull. I'm not a fan. I am also not a fan of the white cabinet handles, but I don't live there. I would remove the wood scrollwork over the microwave and whatever the beige things on the cabinets are next to the microwave.

I would also make the corbels less fancy. There are several threads on here about people trying to reverse their Tuscan kitchen.

More info would be useful. It looks like 2 different kitchens exist in 1 room. Are you trying to make the dark ones look like the lighter ones? Or change everything? Are you asking for backsplash recommendations, paint colors...what?

Thanks everyone for all of your ideas, and the photos are so great. First, I played around with a color visualizer to get an idea about how the dark blue granite would look: Good thing I don't do photoshop for a living, LOL, but it gave me an idea about how it would look. I also put in a call to the granite guy to see what he says about possibly replacing the stove later, and waiting to hear from him to clarify. I don't completely understand the issue about how the granite has to be cut to accommodate the existing stove. He may have to determine that when he makes the template. I do see in the photos that the stainless stove looks good with other appliances being white. The key would be to keep the dishwasher white so that the stove is highlighted. This is all so helpful, thanks!

Here is my oak kitchen with the wooden valence piece above the sink removed and a roman shade - it is actually a "faux" roman shade. I also retrofitted a plate rail into a cabinet. The best thing I did was not cosmetic - but I added under cabinet lighting between my sink and range - it is so helpful, and it makes my kitchen brighter: https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~109854029 I also really like my cream subway tile backsplash. While my countertop is light, I have seen cream subway tile with black counters too: Now I have a question. I realize I cannot see the whole kitchen, but your stools at the island appear to be on the working side of the kitchen and infringe on the needed 42" of walkway space between counter and island. Is that so people can see the TV? I would turn that island around so there is room to work or move it farther away from the counter. If you can afford to lose the storage, take out the cabinet to the right of the sink and put up a couple of shelves and put your decor items there - help get them off the counter. @bry911 thanks for responding. Found myself here while searching for ways to remove subfloor all the way to joists and build back up with new decking. I don’t plan to remove subfloor under exterior walls or the one interior wall in this space. Just inspect and replace everything necessary. I realized after moving in that the house was vacant for 15 years, bought and flipped. Roof has probably had several leaks for a long time, leading to a few surprises. I’m handy, but Im not a contractor, having to figure this out as I go. Whatever I do I want to make sure I don’t cut corners, or compromise the home in any way. Problem, 66’ home with cold floors, soft and sinking in a few locations. Vinyl flooring over subfloor and 10” joists, 24” on center, 4 foot tall crawl space, 3-5mil plastic vapor barrier (not taped or sealed to foundation wall) on ground. I’d like to strengthen up the floor, apply closed cell spray foam under the entire floor and put back up the bat insulation. If it’s going to cost $10,000 I simply can’t do it, I’ll have to patch fix and deal with it. If I can find a way to do it for cost of materials and a day laborer for a day or two, might be possible. Just one of multiple projects, backyard grading isn’t ideal either, have to tackle that too. :/. Wish there was a homeowners anonymous group I could come to, help others with their problems, potentially get help with mine.

First thing…you need more recessed lighting, with brighter LED bulbs. Also, those pendants are strictly down lights, with a narrow stream of light.. Find pendants that provide both uplighting, and downlighting…with a broader beam…something either open on top, or glass. Secondly, I have no problem with the black counters. After all, I have soapstone in my wood kitchen. However, the black backsplash is a major problem. If you would change that out for a light colored tile, you’d see a huge difference in the feel of the kitchen. Perhaps repaint the dark grey bar area in a similar shade of the new backsplash. Here’s my kitchen…wood cabs, soapstone, celadon green backspash, and lots of lighting…including two halophane glass semi-flush pendants. You’ll have to enlarge the first pic, to see the semi-flush fixture. Do you have undecabinet lights? If not, think about getting them…they make a huge difference in a kitchen’s brightness. You can see in the pics above, mine are on.

Oh my goodness I wasnt very clear. I am trying to update a bit to pacify myself for a couple years until we possibly do a full remodel. Would like to brighten up the light colored cabinets and replace back splash all floors in house will be getting replaced but will not be changing thumbprint of kitchen . Planning on taking scrolly thing above microwave down and the gold plates on both sides of microwave. Granite is Santa cecilia I think. Need help with trying to update.

My focus, for now - since you are planning a full remodel down the road - would be to reduce all of the "busy" and ornate elements as much as possible and make the whole more cohesive.

Having the cabinets painted and the backsplash removed and replaced (without moving or harming the granite, which makes both more difficult) will cost a fair amount. If that isn't a worry, fine.

If you intend to do anything yourself, it will pay off to seek out education on how to do it without ending up with unhappy results. Painting the backsplash tile a single, solid color could be an option if you decide that you can't move forward with removal/replacement.

When you have the cabs painted, you can fill the holes of the removed pulls and then install pulls that match the dark cabinets.
