Ideas for setting up/furniture a small living room with a front door?
Comments (19)I've had a house with a small LR where the door opened directly into the room. I used a 60" love seat and floated it facing the fireplace, and then put two chairs on either side of the fireplace. Of course, we didn't have a TV in the room, so you would probably put one chair on either side of the sofa, so one could watch the TV, which I assume is going over the fireplace. In the end, we actually built a wall with an opening into the LR. Everyone told us not to do this as it would make the LR too small. Well, the LR was going to have a pathway to the rest of the house from the front door, so at least we now had a wall where we could put things up against. We were very glad we did this, and subsequent owners of this house have told me they loved having that wall!...See MoreSmall living room with front door-need furniture arrangement help!
Comments (13)I wouldn't do that fireplace surround. It's jus not a good look w/the type room/decor you have. try it elsewhere. try craigslist and similar sources for rugs, tables, shelving. as for the room layout, for the wall that's next to the doorway, and to the right of window (pic #3 up top) what if you did some cool shelving or book cases? I'd also look into doing some sort of shade or blind instead of those bulky drapes. This is a simple layout you could copy. a larger sofa w/a chaise would work for that room better than your two sofas. if doing a tv, try a shallow console and mount the tv to the wall. you can do a 'coffee table' by utilizing an ottoman or something similar. this type of sofa against the large windows would work out better. notice the blinds, nice contrasting paint color on the walls, colorful rug, potted plants. same layout. Imagine your windows are behind the sofa. shallow shorter shelving on the opposing wall is great for kids toys and books. mount tv. fabric ottoman for coffee table. neutral rug....See MoreFront door opens right into the middle of the living room

The front space is mudroom area, the back space is sitting area. They are very much connected though because of the console or chest of drawers that sits directly behind the sofa. In this picture, the grey shaded rectangles are mudroom pieces. Behind the sofa is a console table with baskets underneath for storage. Or, a wide chest of drawers / dresser. I have always had a chest of drawers in my living rooms / hallways in which to store keys, purses, and shoes. Dresser drawers are a perfect size for shoes! 1. I'm not suggesting this style of furniture but a console table like this, with some drawers too and baskets on the bottom for hats, scarves, backpacks work well behind a sofa. 2. Again, not suggesting this style, but a console table like this with big baskets for tall winter boots. You could like baskets like this with boot trays. 3. On the left side of the mud area, you could find a wardrobe closet for hanging coats. My brother has one in his living room. It is vintage and not very deep at all - not even the depth of a hanger. Instead it is full of hooks that their jackets are hung on. They can cram a lot in there. Here are some ideas for ones though I am not even sure what the interior of these looks like: 4. On the right side of the entry area where you come in you could place a bench for sitting and taking your shoes on and off. It could be a bench with storage underneath, an upholstered bench, whatever compliments the style of the furniture in the rest of the room. I like the idea of around coffee table so the room isn't all rectangles. I think a great lighting fixture could help here too. If you were to choose this set up you could get sitting room pieces and mudroom pieces that all look good together and create one cohesive space with two functions....See MoreHelp! Set up a seating ensemble around the fireplace and bookcases (put a TV in the bookcase if you want it in this room), with a couch (facing right), couple of chairs, coffee table, and your rug turned 90 degrees to unify that space. You could put a console table behind the couch to give it a more welcoming face (maybe even with drawers for mittens, or a tray for mail, etc.). Then put your bench under the window to the left of the door, with a coat rack in the corner, boot tray underneath, etc. -- I think this "mudroom" zone will actually just need the upper-left quarter of the space, and could have its own rug. That leaves the lower-left corner for one more functional space: could be a desk and chair, or a game/puzzle table, or a bookcase, reading chair, lamp grouping, or some storage pieces with art. That should put you in good shape. I'd consider reversing the door, as it would feel more natural for the mudroom purpose as well as being less restrictive of furniture placement......See MoreChris Mikel
