Need help with small living room set up
Comments (14)hmmm - lovely room w/wonderful appointments - yes, long narrow rooms really require some creativity from a decorating/function standpt That said - I would definately try doing mock ups w/whatever existing furnishings you do have I would try - 2 couches (small) or loveseats facing each other w/fireplace in btwn - that would delineate DR fr. LR A console table could go behind the far couch - cheat the one at far end (not dr end as far back as possible - as to not loose valuable space - I have long narrow LR - w/Fireplace in middle - large entryway fr. Foyer then at other side of room 2 sets of French doors to sunroom - I finally bit the bullet and dashed the lovely Stickley coffee table to the attic - A HUGE difference - I hated having to walk around that - I think occasional, end tables, even chest of drawers in LR are far more functional - I would also try 2 chairs on either side of Fireplace - put sofa under the longer windows - it seems that it wouldn't block much of the window - then you could consider - Perhaps a nice L shaped sectional Here is a lovely creative use in narrow LR http://www.housebeautiful.com/cm/housebeautiful/images/2-southern-living-room-dec0807_xlg.jpg http://www.designnstyle.com/images/set2.jpg Monablair said it well - cozy not crowded This room has such wonderful potential - I do think you need to think a little outside the box - A few ? to help understand direction How often is DR used - try putting blue tape to where table/chairs ordinatily are - Do you have/ideas for window coverings, rug, accessories etc... Comments (4)Are the rattan chairs comfortable? Could you put both of them on the same side (the fireplace side) and put one leather chair with its back by the door? In terms of a coffee table with book storage, my sense is that it might clutter the center of your narrow room. You might do better replacing the side table by your couch with something that gives you book storage. I would also like to see a taller lamp on that table (or could you just get a taller harp?) Given that you have small kids, an ottoman (or two) that is lightweight and movable might be handy. By the leather chair, a floor lamp with a tray table would be nice. As far as the DR side of the room goes, it seems to call out for some color. The drapes, table and cushions are all neutral. You could add color with artwork or a ceramic pot or . . . Good luck, it is a lovely space....See MoreFurniture Arrangement with Front Door in Middle of Living Room
Comments (10)The room is really nicely done. A chair in that space would work. Maybe a small piece of furniture that has double function near entrance. I also have corner fireplace - a very tricky space & the only place for the TV is next to it. I get the fact of competing focal points etc, but you also have to live in your home. I had my tv in an armoire so it could be closed off when not in use but the armoire was big & bulky and designer Candace Olsen once said for people to stop trying to hide TV's. I also changed a square picture are above fireplace to large round clock....See MoreHelp with a small living/dining room/front door leads to this room)
Comments (4)I think it's a bit tough to give you advice because how you arrange your home depends so much on the lifestyle you lead. That said, I've offered some broad tips to aid in your redesign. Use light furniture with pads, then it can be moved around to make space. You can push the table against the wall and then pull it back when you're entertaining people. This provides some versatility to your space and lets you change your arrangement quickly to suit your needs. Try to find storage solutions that are suspended above the ground. Having a cabinet around the television can provide with a nice dark contrast and additional storage space. Anything high up can be long term storage; all the air space above 7 ft is mostly wasted (Unless you're legendary basketball player Shaq). Experiment! Spend an evening moving furniture around and see how you feel about it! There are many factors about your situation that are hard to consider. Do you watch TV during the day? (if so, moving it across from the window will give you glare!) Is eating together a large part of your family life? What do you see outside of your window? How late do you stay up? etc. Finally, do some critical analysis! What parts of the living room do you spend the most time in? why? Is that chair in the back used often or does it just take up room? Do you spend a lot of time playing with your child and their toys in the little play area against the north(assuming north is up) wall? You can setup a phone to take a timelapse over the course of a day and see exactly what you use your room for and how you enjoy spending your time. I hope this helps and feel free to ask me any more questions! P.S. It seems like your family likes the colour green; I would definitely recommend committing to it and adding some colour to your space! It can be as extreme as painting an entire wall or just getting a new cover for your futon!...See MoreCelery. Visualization, Rendering images
