Refinishing marble table with polyurethane coating

I have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful dining table in black marble. The seller has informed me that the table top has a polyurethane coating and that it has flaked off in on spot.
Is refinishing the table top an option? Can the polyurethane be removed without damaging the marble? Should this be handled by a professional and if so, does anyone know what cost I should expect?
I think I’m getting a good deal on the table, but I want to make sure the table can be restored and at a cost that’s not prohibitive.
Thanks!
