Exterior house color assistance

We are repainting our house and I am looking for opinions. currently the house is white with grey shutters. its cedar wood siding that has required lots of prep. The house faces northwest.

I have gotten new front doors in Yellow which i love. I am thinking of painting the shutters black and keeping the molding and architectural details white but i really think i want the body of the house to be another color. i want to keep it in the traditional vain so maybe a grey color? Does anyone have any ideas? i have stonington grey from BM on my list of colors but are looking for more suggestions. pictures are of the house now with the new yellow doors and the other picture is of house with the old doors.

Whatever color you paint the house you need to define better where the front door is. I had to look for it 2 or 3 times in both your pictures. The yellow doors do help, but I also think you need to make sure the square framing of the lower porch is emphasized, while the upper story railings recede a bit. Can you take the cap finial off the center post of the upstairs railing and flatten it a bit? Maybe do it with all of them?

Is the yard fence necessary for a dog? I would darken that fence or remove it.

I'd be desperate to find any color other than gray for the house itself. I would be very tempted to find a paler shade of yellow than the doors, but exactly in the same family, or be looking at pinks. Are your neigbhors comfortable with non-conformity?

So glad I saw this discussion, and Randita's suggestions. I tried Sherwin Williams Banana Cream SW 6673 on my boring flesh-tone house and it looks florescent in the light. Then I tried Jersey Cream SW 6379 by the left window and it looks toned down and I like it. Our goal is to have the least possible heat gain here in central Florida. So we have a new White roof, which looks light grey to me. Once the house is all yellow I need a door color and wanted to avoid red. I started looking at blues when I thought my recycling bin looked nice against the yellow. I love the blue door suggestion at the link I attached. But I noticed she does not always answer in a timely manner. I am trying to accomplish a Cayman Island / Beach type of color theme. Everyone on my street is either grey or beige. I want to stand out and brighten things up, but not scream offensive color to anyone. Can anyone recommend a way to match a white trim and blue door other than just eyeballing it? I want it too look really well coordinated. The Blues I am considering for the door are SW6803, SW6802 ( is that too light?), SW6796, SW6790, SW6789. I can't wait to see Helene's finished pictures. Patricia, Thank you for your question please see the architects drawing attached. In the drawing you’ll see a brick pattern. That is our current house. The part that is setback is the new part of the house.The brick is red brick like in the picture with the full glass. Shutters are black. We need to select Hardie plank color for the siding on the new part of the house and door color for both doors shown in the photo. Our most pressing issue is selecting door color for door that is set back. It will be up against the Hardie siding color, which we also need to select. Eventually we will need to select colors for the front door. We can paint existing front door whatever color we want. We will want this to stand out. For sure, the house is not ugly. You may not like the brick, but it’s not ugly. Romabio is recommended for brick but if looking for general guidelines, you need a mineral paint for brick. A lime wash is also an option. I’d go with a cream color for the brick and Urbane Bronze for trim, or accent colors. Classic wooden stained door. It will all look very clean, classic and stylish. Update any lights and make sure they are the right size. The columns appear a bit puny, but probably not enough to do anything about. I like their taper. You’ll get the biggest bang for your buck with new landscaping. Please don’t trim shrubs into balls, globes, trapezoids.. Plant arching shrubs such as nine bark (arching growth habits are SO elegant, lovely and natural looking). I’ve just ordered a Little Quick Fire hydrangea: it blooms all the time with flowers that are white and dusty pink. It’s also the kind of plant I picture for southern regions. Have no idea if you get a true autumn down there but shrubs with fall color would be great. Keep your landscaping simple but interesting.

Definitely agree that the doors are underwhelming. Even painted yellow.

Both the upstairs railing and the picket fence detract from the house. The fence in particular. You have a fine home but the fence cheapens the look.

Final thoughts! The balcony above your door is quite a distraction because there is no door to get there. I would either make it a functional space to walk out to, with double doors, or change it to accommodate substantial window boxes and remove the railing entirely

I love Stonington Gray, but that's going to be pretty light on an exterior. Look at Coventry Gray HC-169, Puritan Gray HC-164 and Boothbay Gray HC-165 if you want something darker. You will have to sample outside under different lighting conditions in order to determine how light/dark of a color you want. Blue would also look good with yellow doors. Look at Wedgewood Gray HC-146.
