Paint Design Dilemma

shutter color ideas?

Hi, Help! My painting my house now and I need shutter colors for my 2 tone Benjamin Moore paint. The body below is cabin fever, the upper portion is wildwood crest
The trim is greenmount silk. Currently the house looks a bit dark, the shutters are primer now. Need suggestions soon to paint tomorrow. As you can see it use to be blue.

Toss the shutters. They are not appropriate for double windows.

Because your siding color is very subtle, using white trim is not going to give that crisp contrast that usually makes that look so appealing. Is your house facade generally in full sun like the picture? That makes a big difference, too as those subtle colors get washed out. I'd keep it a study in neutrals and go darker with the trim, pull in the gray from the roof and the siding beige and pick a greige color for all the trim, use a darker version of the same thing for the shutters and possibly the doors Or use a burst of color for the doors if you like color, but I'd keep it a deep color, nothing too bright or pastel. Hard to specify colors but I'd start with a few from the B/M Historical collection - look at Copely Grey, Sandy Hook Gray, Sag Harbor Gray, Fairview Taupe, even Providence Olive and Hampshire Gray. In bright sun like that you'll just have to experiment and see what undertones become the most prominent. The green undertones could totally disappear and you could be left with a really nice, rich neutral which gives a lot of depth. Something like Dinner Party Red could be beautiful.

Your front door color is supposed to be the accent color - different from your trim color and your shutter color. Can you remove those semi-circles or paint them the same color as the siding so they blend? I like your idea of a grass green front door including the sidelight. I would stay away from the very dark colors like black, brown or even the dark red you have now as it creates a dark hole look for your front entry which isn't inviting. Let me see what I can find that would work.

I would like darker gray or black shutters. Front door either same color or a color that leans more green than the teal you're showing in your pictures, and darker. If you're buying a new front door natural wood would look good too. There's a good chance that house originally had a dark wood front door.

Love to remove them but then I have to repair the wall etc. I ended up with Benjamin Moore Market Square Shell. I’m happy. Btw, my door is a 9 panel walnut wood door.

Perfect time then. The shutters are not appropriate for that window type and size.

If you don't want to remove & repair then paint the shutters the same color as the top so that aren't noticeable

Since you shutters are non-operable I would get rid of them. If you want shutters I would replace them with truly operable ones with shutter dogs.

Best toss the shutters and repair the wall if not doable then the shutters the same as the wall color to disapper as much as possible since to do not belong .IMO the garage door needs to be one with some windows and of course the house looks dark you painted it dark. Too bad you did not come here first.

Thank you Patricia and everyone else. I do plan to replace the garage door for sure. I would prefer to remove the shutters too but I think it will be very costly. I’m having a large event this weekend so I was rushing. I still love my dark greens (morning shot) and touches of the walnut wood but since I’m on this site, I would still like to hear more suggestions how it would look without shutters? I can still improve it after my event hopefully my husband won’t kill me! Here is a photo of my new door and the final look so far……lol.

I know of two instances where shutters actually encouraged the damage of the siding behind them. One was water damage, the other was bug damage with the louvered shutters. I recommend you understand what caused the damage and figure out a way to prevent it in the future. Hopefully it was neither of these.

Much better since the windows are the wrong size and style for shutters. I agree a garage door with windows would be nice.

Hi Kelli, there is no damage regarding my shutters, it’s only for aesthetic purposes.
