It should be high enough to give you sufficient light while reading in bed and to provide light to the room. I've found that having the bottom of the lampshade at least 16 inches off the mattress top gives good lighting. Be sure to check how top heavy or tippy the lamp is because those destined for end tables get bumped a lot.

Thanks gk5040. You're in my head...dh and I were just talking about cutting the legs down a bit. I'm not sure how expensive that would be but I think it would help alot. We absolutely love the coffee table now and the end table (also still too big) is growing on us. But that sofa table...gosh that would have looked nice in my dining room but we already have a sideboard table in there. There are no other walls in the house that can accomodate it. The Great room is completely open and no wall space at all. Soooo...I think we are going to move the arrangement back the way it was, decorate some more and check into the cost of cutting it down. Thanks so much for everyone's help! My forearms are aching this morning from moving furniture. ;c)

Too much hanging ceiling clutter! for almost ANY size space. Skip the fan, or skip the hanging decorative lights. Or do two fans. Would help if you show a floor plan of the build as well. At that height, hanging light fixtures are more style than great light. You need LOW light as well. Table lamps standing lamps etc. Floating furniture, means sometimes receptacles in floor. Basically, think bigger and L.E.S.S One strong thing......not necessary for more, and three things hanging in 27 feet. No....please.. Thirty six inches diameter for a single hanging light.......your fans if two need a down rod, and probably a 54 span. Basically? Unless a lantern style? I probably would not do two hanging lights. Unless something like this suited the style of the house, your style. ......and no fan between them
