Looks like Red Drift, an immensely popular rose among the Drift line of low maintenance ground cover roses. Each color in the Drift line has a different growth habit, some more sprawling/carpeting like Red Drift, and some more upright, but all are small foliaged, small flowered, and short growers.

This version of the Drift line, Red Drift, was introduced in the USA in 2008, which makes it fit the age you suspect the bushes you show in your photos are. (This grammar is for you, Rifis. 😁)

I suspect your bush has not been annually pruned for a while which allowed it to mound up considerably. Also the support it (I should say THEY, since there are probably several Red Drifts planted in line, along your fence.), receives from fence behind THEM helps them mound up.

They may also have rooted in several places where canes touched the ground, making new bushes which have created a wider and higher planting of Red Drifts. My Sweet Drift is well pruned every year and is easily capable of spreading beyond 3 ft. if left unpruned, especially over a period of several years. Sweet Drift has growth habits very much like Red Drift, vigorous and spreading.

I agree, Moses. Some of those Drifts can get quite large, depending on a number of factors, and you've stated them well. Mine do so much better in lots of sun, too. Diane

I agree about lots of sun, Diane, just a bit less than 6 hrs. and they stall. Although great roses, the Drifts, my Sweet Drift can get powdery mildew, whereas Popcorn Drift and Apricot Drift are pretty much immune to powdery mildew.

I have to remove this bush due to rosette rose disease. How many 3 gal Drift roses do I need to plant instead and is there a way to make them grow faster?

Omar, are you certain that they have Rose Rosette Disease? Can you provide a photo of the growth? Make it a couple closeups from various locations.

If you indeed do have RRD, I would remove the infected bush(es), ASAP. First, spray them with cooking oil quite liberally, then dig them out, roots and all, and place them into large industrial grade trash bags. You can prune them up into smaller pieces/branches as you place them into the bags. Place the bags in household trash. Now go back to the bed where they grew and turn over the soil to a depth of 6" and spray the ground with cooking oil. Don't saturate iit, just enough to make a light barrier.

Now, spray all exposed roses with a good conventional miticide. Bayer makes one that should do fine. It's called Bioadvanced 3 in 1 Insect, Disease, and Mite Control. This is a precautionary measure.

I would not replant in the location where the infested bushes grew until spring, and after leaf out of any other roses still growing in your garden, to make sure it is safe to do so. Keep a sharp eye on the growth.

Look over the varieties of Drifts that are available. Chose the varieties that you like and plant on centers according to the width given for their mature widths found on the label. If the one you choose reaches three feet across at maturity, plant adjacent bushes of that width on three foot centers, and when mature, they will touch each other and very likely grow into one another by season's end.

Make sure to give them an annual spring pruning to keep them growing their best.

Whether 1, 2, or three gallon sized plant, the spacing is the same, as long as they are the same variety. A bigger potted bush will cost more, but in 2-3 years, the one gallon size should catch up nicely, but the choice is yours.

I am watching the bush like a hawk for any new distorted foliage. The bush to too big for me to remove by myself. I have to hire a professional to dig all roots out and have it disposed it appropriately.

If I end up removing the whole bush, I wouldn't be planting anything until spring because season is almost over.

plants in general.. dont stop growing at some magical height or width.... size ESTIMEATEs.. are just that.. estimates .. and given a decade or two.. can easily be twice the estimate...

also.. with thick shrubs like yours.. it might be hard to actually see under there if there is more than one plant... or whether the plant laid on the ground. and rooted ...

Oh my, YES, Omar, classic Rose Rosette Disease. I am very sorry for your dilemma, but if it's any consolation to you. Our Cynthia has had a devastating invasion of RRD, and last fall, 2022, it popped up in my garden for the first time. I have kept in roses, but the continual threat of reinfestation leads me to think how futile this may be. Time will tell. A garden only of Spirea and Hydrangea paniculata and their myriad beautiful forms seems awfully tempting.

They are having new normal growth but no signs of infestation yet. I am applying miticide today. I will keep looking for any new infestation.

That's the name of the game when growing roses since our "scientists," many years ago, in their infinite wisdom, introduced the mite that carries the RRVirus into the environment to kill the wild Rosa multiflora that had become a noxious weed.

Did they ever think that the mite would find roses in general, equally susceptible to infestation by the virus carrying mite? NO, the enlightened inteligents did not. So, we home rose gardeners suffer the consequences of their genius ineptitude. We grow roses at the peril of being entirely wiped out while the wild Rosa multiflora has seemed to adapt and flourish as a weed beyond control.

I would advise you, Omar, to consider alternates to roses as replacements for your virused roses.

Growing roses is a joy....dealing with Rose Rosette Disease and its ever present pressure of appearing among your roses at any time makes growing roses a nerve bending experience.

I asked someone to remove it completely with the roots. I cannot dig out the roots by myself. I have a mix of roses and non-roses in my backyard. I am a fan of roses because of low maintenance and fast growing but I will be planting a mix of hydrangeas, hastas and some roses in the area next spring.
